Combat
I'm pretty bad at combat. I hit those heavier populated maps and they just swarm me and i lose crew.

Any tips? I have like one laser rifle and i could make 1 or 2. I think everyone is trained to 3 and i should have bulletproof vests on everyone. I kinna stopped playing on this.

More crew training, better weapons and try not to fight large groups all at the same time. Make more friends if you pissed off anyone but the slavers and pirates
3 weapon skill is still kinda low, especially if they have low perception and are wearing spacesuits.
Anyways, once the number of enemies increase, you'll want to bring more people. More bullets from your side peppering the enemy is how you even out the fight against swarms.
The early game with pistols and fists would really suck. The best is to fight on the Player's terms, not the bugs or bots. Against NPC crew is slightly different. This means in all cases use the "terrain" to the Player's advantage.

For defending against boarders, killbox design is something to funnel the attackers into a line against defenders kneeling behind cover (e.g. x-core computer), about 7 tiles away.

For boarding derelicts, try to disembark manually on an exterior tile near an exterior hull opening. Then let the enemies come to you.

For boarding enemy vessels, do the same via the disabled engines (now holes).

For weaponry, if the crew has only weapons 3 level, the best bet against non-humanoids, is shotguns and laser pistols as sides. Shotguns for bugs, and laser pistols for bots. But really once laser rifles are distributed (weapons 5) things will start to turn around.

The best is when plasma rifles are issued. A cluster of four crew with ocular implants, armored vest, well positioned can "cross the T" of a stream of late game humans coming thru a door with near impunity.
