Unless it's your initial 7 dwarves that sprung up from dorf seeds with the caravan, they don't seem to get it.
Typically on migrants that refers to relations living elsewhere that you can do sweet tweet about unfortunately.
Well maybe solo squad expedition to wherever their family lives but that just seems like a death sentence to the lonely dorf so I've never felt desperate or cruel enough to try it.
"Separated from," from what I could find in a quick search, refers to someone they knew being kidnapped, most likely. That could have happened before they immigrated to your Fortress, too. Check the name and be very sure to check for the full name as dorfs can have the same surname.
If it's truly their own family members, wait for a bit. It may have been from when they were restricted to a Burrow, perhaps. Children don't often respond to a Burrow order and parents in them will try to reach them, but can't.
(Still learning those specific behavior mechanics, so just some ignorant suggestions. :))
But I'm fair sure assigning a single dwarf also assigns the spouse and children, though can't rightly recall.
