Dwarf fortress is going to complete obsolete as a story generating game in about ~5 years time by AI Models.
Mark my words. There'll be a game that comes in the near future that'll absolutely blow DF out of the water by using large AI language models. At the moment technology like ChatGPT is already insanely impressive, but it'll get exponentially better at a really fast rate. Meanwhile DF is moving at a snail's pace and using tech that's bordering on 20 years old. When someone constraints a language model AI by some rules of a game like RimWorld or DwarfFortress, it's just going to be on another level to the point where DF will seem like an ant compared to an intelligent human being.

No. Multi was the one who decided I was "complaining about an AI service being subscription instead of free" when I was merely saying that AI tech bros should expect price rises whilst-ever they keep using the tech; more and more if they do so ecstatically as they do now.
Oh, really?

What AI tech bros haven't realized is that companies are going to sieze your AI models, and monetize them to the high heavens. It will happen to every AI model you enjoy. It has ALREADY happened with AI dungeon, which now gives you like 15 posts unless you pay a subscription.
You complained here that AI Dungeon went from free to paid, implying anything but free is "high heavens" and unacceptable.

And AID subscriptions never changed. They just got rid of the free tier.

That's not a complaint it's not free, it's telling you to prep for the paid models and using an example of a time that happened already.

NovelAI, ChatGPT, probably even Google Colab, Huggingface, SD, etc etc, they'll all go the same way once they move from "Bro we're doing research bro" to "Here's a product you can make on your own with words."

You can say it's worth paying. That's your opinion. Everything's worth what its purchaser will pay for it after all. But pretending they're not gonna turn it into a money sink is historically inaccurate.

Alright, I'm done. I'm losing IQ points rapidly.

Complaining that AI Dungeon isn't free implies I actually want to use it, but they took out the sex so who would want to lololololol.

Also, paying 15 bucks monthly for AI Dungeon or $0.0200 per 1000 tokens for GPT-3 Davinci is hardly out of the reach of anyone

my dude, do you not have mouths to feed? $15/month is way too much for access to an obsolete language model trained on masses of stolen content, and I doubt it's gonna get cheaper as it scales up

Stop reading these forum posts. You're stealing them by assimilating them into the neural network in your brain.

Yes, and you'll need a super computer to run it. Running AI, especialy a good AI, with a big model, like GPT, is very expensive, which is why everything since GPT 2 runs on the cloud.
Current text models like KoboldAI can run on a decent (3070 and up) RTX card, so maybe it will not be that much of a problem.

Also keep in mind that realtime 3d used to be expensive too and now even a phone can render a 3d game.
MozarteanChaos 2022 年 12 月 16 日 下午 3:11
if that ever happens, it'll be a long way into the future - we can't even get AIs to reliably tell the truth about our actual real world yet, i don't trust them to be able to keep track of one they made up.

Don't threaten me with a good time. I would love to play it.
In the meantime, I will play hundreds of hours in DF since no other game like this currently exists.

Lets have a look at some of the AI text generators out there that the public can use. AI Dungeon doesn't even have access to GPT-3 davinci anymore, and their policies are very clear on what you can and can't create with their service. NovelAI, while respecting user privacy and have no filters, is permanently stuck on a low parameter model. HoloAI took your money and ran. Kobold is as only good as your computer is, which for text generators is going to be not much, but hey it's free. Sudowrite has GPT-3 davinci but is going to cost you an arm and a leg for it. On top of all of that, these models can never stay consistent with themselves without heavy handholding due to quirks with the model and their limited token memory. Oh and the new models coming out that could fix things are explicitly non-commercial which means ♥♥♥♥ you, you'll never get access to it in your lifetime. Big tech and research firms that handle AI do not have your interests in mind and do not want the average person to use them.

Sure, Dwarf Fortress may be obsolete by AI, but it won't matter if nobody is allowed access to it.

refusing to assimilate forum posts into your brain would explain a lot about your replies

this is way too smart of an overview of the state and future of machine learning to be on the steam community discussion forums of all places

People don't play Dwarf Fortress for AI-finessed prose, they play to watch naked dwarves beat each other to death with socks.

Sure, dude, lol. You can generate random text stories by using AI, but you can't generate a highly detailed and designed world with it's systems. Good luck doing that with AI when it took 20 years to create by a human.
You will be able to do those things, it's just a matter of time. We're not there yet and for now Dwarf Fortress is at the top of the playing field, and even if it is ever surpassed by AI-created games, it'll still have historical and inspirational value. But to say AI can't do these things, or to suggest it would necessarily take an AI longer than it would take a human, that doesn't seem right to me.

It's already taking off though, and not by force.

I do think most of this is due to the infancy of the field, and I doubt the "in your lifetime" estimate would be accurate here. Every Tom ♥♥♥♥ or Harry with some programming know-how and the necessary hardware can create machine learning systems already, you're not going to be able to put that monkey back into the box. There'll be private implementations, sure, but I can't see that being the only place you'll find this technology, now or in the future.
