Not specifically, but we do have tools for that? (https://partner.steamgames.com/doc/features/multiplayer) Edit: That is to say, Toady more or less gave carte blanche for that kind of development recently? (http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=169696.msg8486538#msg8486538)

as far as i know, the one person who was actively working on a multiplayer mod had a very bad run-in with long covid and has not been able to return to that effort

if anyone else is working on such mods at this time, i have not heard of them

Don't validate the trolls they aren't here to contribute, just to start drama for attention

Yes. Always check their profile before replying to something like that.

It's it's private, they're hiding something.
If it's near public but they're hiding what game's they play or own, you can at least verify the person owns the game by the mouse icon next to their name.

dfplex relied pretty heavily on the UI being (a) navigable by keyboard and (b) split into separate screens (DF now uses a bunch of panels on the same screen for almost everything). It's difficult to reimplement for the new UI, which is another reason why nobody has picked it up yet.

I could mock this endlessly all day long, but I choose not to because, really, what's the point? Though I will say it must be convenient to dismiss every single hurty opinion you hear as "trolling."

I have no interest in drama or attention. It's just that mention of "(long covid)" in serious conversation demands open mockery. Likely truth is the guy got bored and wanted an excuse to get out of a perceived (or real) obligation to work on the mod.

You may carry on, now.

Just as a heads up, you can always check if the person owns the game via the mouse icon besides their name. It does not matter if the profile is private or not.

For example 'Pok' above me has a completely private profile. Still the mouse icon shows.

^ That's important to be aware of.

You can also tell a private profile just by moving the mouse over their name. Nothing wrong with private profiles. Found some have to hide their profile from their employer, family and someone said hide it from their government, I don't buy that one yet.

From patterns observed being on these forums far too much. The edgier more sarcastic comments come from private profiles. Sarcasm doesn't go well unless you say it aloud. I've heard some call them farmers for clown points, meaning the steam award you can give to any post (yellow ribbon top right), somehow that gives people points to spend in the store?

Wild game mechanic right there huh?

Game mechanic. Like these forums are a video game for people to win at huh? Like we're all gamers playing a game? What game is a foot? If you believe in Maslow's Hierarchy of needs, it'd be the need for friendships and recognition.

It's also not just Steam, it's all social media since 2010. I blame youtube for that one, pre-2010 it was filled with funny videos, it was the algorithm that changed what we watch, what we like, what we share, also what we think (reference Rabbit Hole podcast by NYT for context).

Basically, private profiles are more often abused as a shield to hide behind. That's what I meant hiding something. It could be anything. Even them being mad at themselves for not being able to play and posting an angry comment or thread about something else to get some attention, maybe they can't play due to health reasons. We never know. It's fun searching for the truth. It doesn't mean everyone that says they have it is telling the truth. I do believe people are naturally good. Especially here in Steam Forums. We seek to help first and foremost solving what we believe the problem is as it was presented to us.

about 2 years ago I had all this in my head. seeing winning a debate as the game, but it is camouflaged in a thread asking for help with something.

These people getting banned, might not be who you think would be bannable, perhaps they just wanted someone to talk about what they wanted to talk about, nobody did, so they learned what's needed to get people to talk about what they want to talk about, found what people are talking about and finally was able to talk to others regarding what they posted. It might not have been what they originally wanted to talk about, but they've learned, and "beat that game's first boss". Over time they'll learn how to create threads to start conversations about what they originally wanted to talk about and will eventually "beat that game".

reddit. in some sub-reddits it's like a functional meme pinterest, like you have to create a meme in order to start a conversation. For game sub-reddits, are the meme's more centered around gameplay when compared to steam forum threads? yes they are. for that reason, i originally thought that's why a dev would favor reddit over steam forums. (to add, some sub-reddits are bad, like r/eldenring. if you want to discuss gameplay or get info, you really have to create a meme) <participate in the created culture>

Also. Twitter is a platform built on promoting negativity yea? That's safe to say and easy to see for those that don't use the platform a lot. Even sarcasm is negativity and I often hear in the news about controversial topics or topics that start a debate, all started by them citing the argument from a twitter post, which made it into the news. The social media that we've been using since 2010 or so has all been designed this way. We, are the media.

Might've strayed. Wanted to share that view that I hope helps out in other areas. Don't believe a word I say, perhaps I'm the one not being truthful. There's a simple test. Here in Steam Forums, get active in different forums/threads or just read a few threads. Whenever someone says anything negative, even if they say "I'm having performance issues" . Right there they're saying the game is bad, you can't assume their computer is bad. Whenever you see something negative, take a mental note if the profile is private or not. Are those saying something negative attempting to create entertainment for views? Threads die if nobody replies, perhaps they're dialing up the negativity for visibility. And since sharing that quote above. I been wondering, if that person was like this 10 years ago. Did they, like me, just want their question answered? It's easy to say 'troll' but it's hard to ask 'whats really wrong'.

WOW! Privacy is so scary, we should all have our Photo IDs, bank account, home address and baby pictures tied to our every online activity so these scary people with their scary words can't hide!

Terminally online snowflakes need to get a grip of reality, if you don't like something block it or leave, stop trying to take control of everything like tyrants.

They won't. They've been put to sleep by corporations and defense sciences presented as "Education". They couldn't get rid of online anonymity without the cute Covid Social Score first, remember this post in six years.

Problem is, dfplex works by rapidly entering and exiting menus (once per menu depth per player per frame), and then sending essentially a screenshot of the result for each player (in tiles, not pixels). The logic is very tightly bound to the pre-steam-release code; the way menus and graphics works in the new version is very different. Especially the menus -- that's the real problem.

Because of these changes in the game, there's just no way realistically to modify dfplex to work with the new version. Multiplayer needs to be redone entirely from scratch. Many of the same ideas might be applicable, at least, but a total code overhaul is still needed. I don't have plans to do this myself any time soon, but you can contact me on the dfhack discord server if you'd like to discuss how one might go forward with such a project in more detail.

The best solution, of course, is for bay12 to implement multiplayer natively. I hope they can see this mod, how
much fun it is, and how simple it would be to implement it natively, and maybe they will feel inspired?
