How do i tell how much iron i have? or wood?

How do i use my book keeper to tell me how much iron or wood or copper iron ore or steel iron ore or pig iron ore i have??

the stocks button does not show those types of resources
i dont kno what i can craft usually because i dont know what abundance of resource i have

other than making a loot drop off zone how do i tell total resource count??

I have a study its not related to those number either
i cannot find the spot that says you have 500 of this type of wood or ore

The menus never display a total number of "every ore that could be made into iron", but in the Stocks menu, the Stones tab lists how many hematite, magnetite, and limonite[dwarffortresswiki.org] stones you have, which are the iron ores. After you smelt them into iron bars, they show up in the Bars tab.

Wood is listed in the Logs tab. Note that if you make buildings out of logs, they'll still appear in the Stocks menu. The red and white numbers by each tab show the "used" vs "total" items, if I remember correctly.

You only need to give your bookkeeper a room with a chair and enough free time to do the job of counting everything. Only after the bookkeeper does his job will the information become available.

And if your bookkeeper has crap bookkeeping skills then your ♥♥♥♥ out of luck. You will need to wait for them to get better. Thats why I start all my fortresses with an expedition leader with skills in Bookkeeping and Managerial skills as well as appraising and negotiations.

Then all you have to do is click on the Stocks button. then type in what your looking for, or scroll through the list and click the item. Then read the number displayed in the items header for each found item in each category.

Ores only have the one category, so those are easy to 'count'. But items made from multiple materials all have a separate list. But each lists header has a number of the total in that list, so just adds those together.

I'll repeat, the better your bookkeepers skill the more accurate the count will be. So if your bookkeeper does not have good bookkeeping skills then you will not accurate information.

Also i think it helps speed up the bookkeepers job if its already in a stockpile. Not sure but i think it does

It doesn't. The game doesn't need anything to be in a stockpile.

it was there the whole time i just smoke too much weed and play video games not enough
