I don't see any multiplayer being possible other than running two forts on the same world, perhaps, but then again it'll be more SP with a few MP functions (like trade and invasions).
Wrong game to have a multiplayer, really. Maybe for adventurer mode co-op ? Even then I only see that maybe happening in 20 years from now on (maybe we'll reach DF 1.0 ?)
Or it's a story generator.
Have you considered having a fortress that each player plays for one in-game year, then you hand it off to the next ruler?
Read Boatmurdered:
https://lparchive.org/Dwarf-Fortress-Boatmurdered/Introduction/
A group passed a fortress around and wrote about their experience.
One of the most amazing things I've ever read.
But it's quite the opposite of a group working together in multiplayer.
Exactly the same way I play Rimworld with my wife: We have bases near each other, we often trade items and help each other, if one is going through a famine the other might have extra food that can be sent to their base, if something funny happens we often say "Check this out" for a laugh, if one needs a quest finished soon the other can send extra workers. Often I would say "Send dudes!", "You mean nudes?" "No, I'm about to be attacked by a huge force, send dudes!", and then I could hear the sounds of transport pods arriving to help me in that dire situation.
That's how you could play this game multiplayer too. Play together, share experiences at the same time, trade, perhaps fight together.
Back on topic, Tynan built Rimworld from the get go to be easily modable. I know why he did that, so modders could fix what he couldn't and add lots of extra content. It was definately a good choice, community mods are the #1 reason I played so much Rimworld since it launched long before Steam.
Bad news is Dwarf Fortress was started as a passion project and changed a few times and well ... its code base is not friendly. Actually it will bite you, spit poison in your eyes and steal your alcohol then call you names.
Co-op Dwarf Fortress would be fun as hell, but I doubt it will happen. If I am proven wrong then I will get a new tattoo of a pink space pony or something else equally 'girlish'.
Cheers
Want to take 50 year turns with your close friends and try to build a single mega fort? you can do that! Or you could have it that each person that plays creates their own fort in a shared world.
the Dwarf Fortress File Depot[dffd.bay12games.com] also has some pregenerated worlds and some community forts for you to play and toy around with.
But if somehow it ever happens, I'll double down and get myself a tattoo of a dwarf riding a pink unicorn, or something like that too.
This has been done really well in plenty of games without needing to develop any server side or other complicated multiplayer logic really.
Most of the posts we're seeing about multiplayer are from misinformed people who lack experience and imagination. As one poster pointed out, this could also be accomplished with steam remote play.
To reiterate, technical feasibility is NOT an issue - It's simply a lack of expertise and willpower of someone to start this project.
Perhaps one of you, having read this and now knowing it is technically feasible will go and create this mod.
