Fixing the ranged dwarf bugs is on the menu, they've talked about.
I'd like an official fix now also but it probably will take more ages.
Its DF, thats normal.
PS :
I got crossdwarfs to work for me in more than a few forts with the simple no bin multiple floor bolt storage workaround. I also used burrows to line up my crossdwarfs and keep them in place. sort of, where I wanted them.
I saw an bolt (crossdwarf) community mod recently uploaded.
I have not had time to test it out.
good luck
DF has like 15 years of play time not recorded on Steam.
There's still plenty playing the old free versions as well, for Adventure Mode for instance.
You can actually easily remove them yourself, simply by not creating a marksdwarf squad.
I did many forts without any because it takes some time to get them to work. Marksdwarves atm are a thing you can play around with if you feel like it, but you can do perfectly fine without them.
I fnd them only to be indispensible to kill enemies stuck in water, but probably I could also kill those in some other way as well.
