Farming / Growing Food??

So I must have missed something here, the tutorial should at least give you some hints on starting a garden or a plot of land to grow food. Either above ground or below..

So googling provides some key combinations for the text version of the game that are meant to get you into a gardening, or create plot menu. Zero results on current version.

So my fortress is growing in leaps and bounds but my food rations are down to zero..

Farm plots are under build / workshops / farming

u need to construct a farm plot on soil ... u find it in the farms submenu of the construction/building menu

u can also collect herbs overground and use the seeds from that in overground farm plots
everything u do with the plant will yield seeds, except burning/atom smashing/ COOKING (in the kitchen)
dont cook plants and ull be fine

also: light tiles (from sunshine) will stay light tiles, even when u construct a roof and walls over it. thats how u can make ur overground farms safe, and u can put all miasma creating industry there, like butchery cheese maker, refuse pile and all that

u can also put farm plots on stone floor, if u washed it over with water, which laces the floor with mud

Build menu, workshops, farming, farm plots. You need mud or soil so build plots in a layer right below the surface. If you don't have that then pick a different location for your fort, cavern diving and surface farming is trickier for new players. Basically if you can build the plot then it's in the right spot. Once a dwarf builds it then you can click on it and assign crops, I suggest nothing but plump helmets in one big plot and then experiment with other crops in smaller plots. Don't forget the wiki, even info from the last version is valid for crop types and how to process them!

I did a search and found 50+ recent guides and tutorials for Dwarf Fortress Farming.

Click on the question mark next to the map, it opens a tutorial that includes farming instructions.
