First of all: pick as you first black widow match either the one under the toolbox, or the one under the rock between castle Moldorc and the Hedge. Unlike the others, those two let you have two fundamental tactical options: room to build defensive structures, and most importantly freedom to GTFO and run away if needed.
Also, if you're playing on woah, do NOT go fighting the widow in the brawny boy bin unless you're twice as ready, or you will have a bad surprise.
Exploiting the infection debuff is a good idea, so go with either toenail sword or rusty spear. Pair it with a sturdy shield.
I can tell that an upgraded sour battleaxe absolutely destroys widows, but you obviously need to face at the very least one before even getting that.
My advice is to build defenses whenever possible, to keep a solid obstacle between you and the widow while you shoot your strongest arrows at her from a safe distance.
I suggest using the firefly trinket to slow her harder. As the buffed speed make it impossible to retaliate while her buff last.
Make sure you snipe the widowlings before you attack her, those will bite you and inflict a separate venom on you, that runs alongside the widow's, draining your life even faster.
From my experience (500+ kills cuz I farmed them for raw science), brute force is your friend. Roly Poly armor, potion spam, big ass axe, and ignore the spiderlings. She's going to get one eventually, might as well let her have em. Also sour battleaxe is the best because you can get a big ass speed buff when using it. From my testing, it outperformed all other weapons.
What’s funny is the way this is worded makes it sound like this is a fairly rare occurrence or they don’t use this attack often.
Yet my time in Whoa tells me they usually start the dang fight by web shooting and summoning a baby to immediately kill and buff themselves and they don’t really go more than 3 or 4 attacks unbuffed before summoning another baby. They are buffed about 1/3 to 1/2 the fight probably.
Yeah they are probably the scariest enemy in game now for non boss enemies. I can usually take them now that I’ve practiced a lot (I use sour battleaxe) but every now and then they can grab a buff at the wrong time and can still turn the tables and finish you off before you even realize it.
It sucks but honestly the best way to deal with buffed widow is to hide behind terrain or sit where they can’t reach you till it wears off. If you can’t do that…you better be ready to heal through and somehow deal with the unblockable sped up 5 hit combo. Honestly, I’d never recommend a hardcore or permadeath run in this game just for them alone. Not on Whoa difficulty at least.
I did manage to take em out with the sour battle axe level 7 though. And chopper mutation tier 3. So, yeah, maybe I should modify my advice to first take on schmector and acquire the sour battle axe, and tier 9 armor for sure. Alongside some beefy smoothies.
