On the other hand, I'm a solo player and there's a lot of little things that don't feel quite right to me and add unnecessary frustration to the game. The combination of tedious world traversal (seriously, no mounts?!?), relatively small inventory (again, mounts) and relatively high costs for items might not be as big of a deal for cooperative play where you have someone else to help you gather items and another inventory, but it just doesn't feel good in solo play and is a grind.
Add to that the overly aggressive creatures in too many areas of the map (why is every last spider a hunter-killer that ignores all other insects but goes berserk as soon as they detect the player? same for stinkbugs, bombardier beetles, and far too many other creatures), slow, punishing combat and clunky world interactions (I get stuck on grass ALL THE TIME!!!) and even just navigating the world feels like a slog.
Sure, I want some challenge, but I don't want tedium. If there's a moderately difficult common enemy, make the fights short and deadly as long as you're properly equipped, not long drawn out affairs that just waste my time. Defeating my first Wolf Spider (and to a lesser degree Orb Weaver and Ladybug) was an interesting challenge (although it was far more difficult to find one alone than it should have been where I'm not getting ganked by additional spiders), but I don't want to go through that every time I need a spider fang since apparently Orb Weavers don't have them(despite also being able to poison the player).
With a few balance tweaks Grounded could be amazing, but right now it feels like the devs focused a bit too much on co-op and "challenging" combat at the expense of players like me who coming from Subnautica loved the solo exploration and aren't as excited about fighting overly hostile, damage sponge bugs all the time.
I 100% understand what you mean, I mean it does feel overwhelming for solo players, and it may be a different type of enjoyment if you were playing co-op.
And about the insects, they do go berserk more on the player because those are the threats, but they also target other bugs sometimes as well, as you play through the game it may get better, unless you've already completed the story of course, but Subnautica is a pretty cool game, and coming from Subnautica may be a quite a bit different because Grounded is quite difficult, not saying Subnautica doesn't have it's times.. but it's a different feel compared to Subnautica for sure, they both are very good games though.
I mean the last task with Grounded is quite difficult, and I'd recommend a 2nd person for sure on the last part of Grounded, but there is some solos that complete the game.
The bugs at times can also be glitchy and buggy as well, but as you go through the game you'll get better and better weapons that make the experience a whole lot easier.
Wolf spiders are also extremely annoying at times especially when they pop up when you don't want them to, normally for early game if you want spider fangs you'll have to cheese em, which still may be difficult to do.
But it does have a awesome feel to it unlike any other game I have ever played, but starting out in Grounded was pretty rough for me!
Regardless, have a good week!
Multi-player is as good as the other players, else you're playing solo with a bunch of nincompoops. A good, coordinated team can hold a fortress-defense pretty much indefinitely - two gunners, one support mage, and someone keeping up on the crafting to keep the turrets supplied and damages repaired.
I 100% agree the JavaMatic is by far one of THE HARDEST things in all of Grounded, I've beaten every boss, but by far JavaMatic is the hardest out of everything in Grounded.
But I'm in LOVE with Grounded, just purely from how it feels and the style, and how everything works, and the story, it just honestly is the perfect game for me, despite all of the hard times.
And I've not done it with a lot of people, although that would also probably be pretty fun! with a fair share of chaos, but even with one person it's still pretty fun, there is many things that pretty much require you to have another person though, I wouldn't say it's very single player friendly..
And yeah, the hedge is pretty chaotic but pretty fun at the same times! sometimes ya just have to search up guides too! all the labs have their fair share of chaos and excitement!
But anyways, have a awesome week!
But it was a beautiful journey and i recommend this game to anyone who's remotely interested in the genre.
I played the entire game solo on medium and didn't have any major issues, so i heavily disagree.
If you want less challenging combat switch the difficulty to easy. If you want to just explore set the bugs to passive. All the options to accomodate you are already in the game, there's no reason to nerf medium and whoa just because people have an aversion to playing on easy mode (even if that's what they want).
I mean there isn't too much replayability, but there is definitely some, there is a variety of stuff you can do in Grounded once you've beat the game, that includes building, trying to max out everything or just relying on new updates.
But with the new playgrounds mode it's even better, some may not enjoy playgrounds but it definitely is refreshing if you've beat the story part of Grounded.
You can't actually lower enemy health that much without turning most things into one-combo kills.
And you can kill pretty much every tier 1 monster (and quite a few tier 2's, like stinkbugs and bombardier beetles) by throwing a few basic pebblet spears 5 minutes into the game.
Those massive health pools simply don't exist.
It sounds like you're either not taking advantage of creature weaknesses, not upgrading your weapons or not finishing combos properly (the 3rd hit does way more damage than the first). Because what you're describing simply isn't a thing on medium, let alone easy.
I played a heck of alot of survival games, this is a just a carbon copy of all of them, go about find items and level up your kit, kill certain things to get ingredients- and repeat until bored .
But the world is interesting, it sort of reminded me of the movie "honey i shrunk the kids"
I like the game being diffucult, it's immersive.
And I'm only a casual gamer... with a controller.
One thing they need to solve:
Bugs like Wolfspiders and Fireflies getting stucked to easily.
I can kill a lot of Wolfspiders in early game because of this.
...Bugs stucked for a whole night is not immersive.
Can they not back out? Jump back? Teleport away? Anything?
And my pet gets stucked to often inside of a tree trunck.
Though i actually think they made it too easy (not health or damage-wise, but in terms of bug AI. They used to be much scarier).
I realize that was a little too hardcore for more casual gamers, but i think it's a little sad they got nerfed so heavily.
Spending my first night in early access cowering in my hut while a wolf spider was crawling around it was one of the most intense experiences i had in Grounded, along with the jumpscares when they used to follow your trail and hunt you across half the yard.
It really sold the feeling of being a very squishy small fry in a very dangerous world filled with big bugs. The release version is kinda lame in comparison.
...
There is many more intense experiences you will experience in Grounded, besides a wolf spider, they become very easy enemies later in the game.
I strongly disagree with the release version being lame, they perfectly crafted this game, plus you do get the feel that your a "squishy small fry".
People still complain about the game being "too hard" or "too difficult" but in reality if you wanted a harder version pick "Whoa" mode, if you want a easier version pick "Medium" or "Easy" mode.
Plus they still do hunt you across the yard, they follow you when they sense you but if you get too far they'll leave you alone, which is fair because Wolf Spider's aren't the hardest enemies in Grounded.
Yes, but if you die your pet won't follow you, but if it is following you then your pet will teleport to you if you go too far.
And, the AI for wolf spiders may not be perfect but them being able to teleport if they were stuck would be even less immersive.
But I do agree with you on Medium being perfectly balanced.
And a lot of people complain about the game being too difficult but clearly they aren't in the right game mode if they think it's too hard for them.
