the side notes are Left shift and Right shift.
could you tell me how to shift?
the left shift is below the caps key (caps lock). then the right is below the enter key. you just press like how you press the other notes. if it's a long one you just hold until the end of the note.

I can't seem to do side notes with my controller. I tried both sets of bumpers and nothing happened in the tutorial.

You have to rotate/spin the bumpers, not pressing it.

You mean rotate the thumbsticks?

Cool, thanks! Hopefully they fix the input prompts in the near future to show controller ones when that's in use.

This is the worst thing ever.

Yeah, I have trouble getting used to it. I may just stick to keyboard or hope they allow remapping that at some point.

You actually don't need to rotate the stick. On PS4 at least, just pushing the stick to 1 direction was enough and way better too.

I don't understand how to do the side notes either. I don't know how they even work.

I get that it says "SIDE NOTE" on the track, but I noticed that this warning appears on different parts of the track. So do I push shift when the side track note gives over that space? Do I let it go once it goes past the warning sign? Or do I hold it down until the note reaches the judgement line? Do i hold it down shift the entire time until the note is complete?

I've done the side note tutorial literally 23 times in a row and I can't get anything more than 50% of the score on any note consistently, and that's with me trying every possible combination I can think of.

The instructions aren't really clear, it just says "A side note is a side note, try do one" without explaining how they're different. Could someone please explain how they actually work?

If you are using a Keyboard then its just like a normal long note, so, just press and hold the key you have assigned to the side notes when it enters the judgement line, like you would do with a normal long note. The side note can appear on both right and left side, so press and hold the key for the side it appear on. If it appear on left side, you use left shift, and right, you use right shift, if you are still using the normal keybindings.

TL;DR - They're another 2 keys you have to play besides the n-button mode you selected. For example, 4-button mode is 4+2 side tracks.
