I think they mentioned at some point they don't plan on making BTD7 and just expanding on 6 but I just heard that in a video or something so don't take my word for it

tbh what should they change?

BTD 6 ist well balanced and offering a ton of stuff to do.
And they keep adding heroes, quests and new Bosses.

They could use a better engine (btdb2's for example) and dedicated servers so coop isn't a lagfest, but other than major technical improvements, anything else could just be added in an update. We got map editor and a tower editor is coming later too.

Well they could make a FPS version like Sanctum 2. You get to play the hero you select FPS style and also drop the towers along the path etc.

if they made a 7 it would have to be pretty radically different from 6 otherwise why not just make it content for 6?

What they should do, is work on AVR support, so you can play on a table/outside and walk around it IRL and place towers down by hand

I keep forgetting this is BTD 6 and not 5, and every time I see someone say BTD 7 i think, "man they are skipping a whole number"
