Alien Shooter - Last Hope

Alien Shooter - Last Hope is the newest title in the legendary lineup from the Alien Shooter games. And like every other Alien Shooter title, Last Hope also brings in that familiar taste of intense gory goodness.

In addition to that familiar intense fun shoot ‘em up experience, Last Hope is also bringing in a new chapter to the legendary series with 10 new missions.

Plot: The War against the monsters still rages on. Humanity is surviving on thin lines.

The Opposition forces are running dangerously low on resources. And the number of battle-worthy men and women decreases every day.

One of the research labs managed to create a weapon ready to strengthen the Opposition forces. Which will allow humanity a better fighting chance.

Now you have to reach the research lab in order to find the weapon and improve it on the battlefield.

Which is stated on the store page of the game, which I thought was a regular handheld weapon but later I realized the store page was mentioning a Turret system. And you must use them in battle and fight your way to an upgrade terminal in order to upgrade them.

But the ultimate goal is to find and destroy the tunnels, pathways, and teleportation devices used by the monsters.

Gameplay: Like any other Alien Shooter title, Alien Shooter – Last Hope also presents that great intense gory shoot ‘em up gameplay.

It’s gory, it's bloody, it's chaotic, and a hell of a lot of fun. I mean, come on . . . who doesn’t like mowing down hordes of monsters with a Minigun!

The base gameplay is super simple, yet functional, and comes with simple yet effective movement machines with WASD/Arrow key/ Right-click to move.

Left-click to shoot, with an ever-present white crosshair. And 1-9 number keys for changing weapons or you can just use your mouse wheel.

The base gunplay is still the same and features weapons such as Two-handed Pistols, Shotgun, Grande Launcher, Minigun, Rocket Launcher, Freeze Rifle, Plasma Rifle, Flame Thrower, and a Magma Minigun.

Each weapon, except for the two pistols and the turrets, can be either unlocked and bought from the end mission store or can be found in hidden locations.

I would like to say each weapon features both positives and negatives, but some are so good that they don’t have any negatives. Although clunky shooting machines do count, which all of them have in different forms?

For example, the Magma Minigun is just awesome with its incredible fire rate and DPS, and is an all-round monster-killing machine, but comes with a flaw; at any given moment the gun stops working and won’t fire for unknown reasons or a bug!

The same goes for every other gun, except the pistols; all of them have some sort of flaw. But the flaws didn’t hold me back from mowing down monsters; with nine weapons, there’s plenty for all of them.

In regards to ammo, after mowing down hundreds of monsters at a time, there seems to be no shortage of ammo! But in a good way; as one of your weapons dries up, you can switch to another one with the click of a button and pray to god that you have more ammo drops for your op weapons, such as the Magma Minigun.

You can get ammo by searching around the facility, and get ammo drops by killing the monsters. In addition, you can fill up your inventory from the shop at beginning of each mission, in exchange for money.

Now let’s get to the main feast, the monsters themselves. Last Hope features quite a few different types of monster to get through, and at the very end, all of them at once! But I’m asking for more; I want to see more unique monsters added.

Each monster has its cousin variant, with unique colors and more muscle power, and some even with added blasters on their back.

Going through all of these monsters was so satisfying. Throwing down multiple turrets at a check-point and blasting down entire hordes never felt so rewarding!

The Monster AI felt rather dumb, though. Sometimes even after seeing me up close they would not come after me if I got into a different room!

I got really upset after finishing my 10th mission.

The game felt rather short, even with the last two missions taking so long to finish, including killing the entire horde. The game needs more content.

World design: Those who have played through the previous Alien Shooter titles will appreciate the classic top-down pixelated world of Alien Shooter.

Each sector of the facility was well designed and looked pretty good. They all looked almost the same, which did not bother me too much, although I would have appreciated a bit more diversity with the sector designs and rooms.

Sound effects and music: An excellent selection of background music that really accentuated the intense gameplay, although it did get repetitive rather quickly.

When it comes to sound effects, we shouldn’t really be too optimistic for such a small title, but I must say Last Hope did a decent job at it. Mind you, some aspects, such as the shotgun sounds, were horrifically bad.

In conclusion, Alien Shooter – Last Hope turned out to be a great addition to the franchise. It’s fun, it's gory, it's bloody, it’s chaotic and it's just an overall great game for the price.

Although there are some shortcomings, such as only having 10 missions and a survival mode, I hope the issues get resolved with more content updates.

Oh well. Here we go again... The Last Hope is another version of the first iteration of Alien Shooter. Slightly refurbished levels, same enemies, and, quite notably, a good game pace and balance!

There's nothing really new, except that idea of upgradable turrets which you can set as you like, to aid yourself in the direst situations. But it works! The game drive is ok, the optimization for Win10 and resolutions 2k+ is ok... What else you can ask for, from a twin-stick shooter? A decent story, maybe? Superb visuals? Oh, c'mon!

This game is short, moderately challenging, and adequately priced. If you play such no-brainer shooters from time to time, then it's a good pick, to spend an evening. And if you don't have time for shooters like this, it's okay again! Just don't buy it! My mark is 7/10. A good game, for what it's worth.

Another game in the Alien shooter franchise. Literally everything is recycled from previous games. Only new thing is the ability to pick up and drop powerful turrets. Because of the new turrets the weapons have been nerfed, except the pistols which seem to have been buffed for some reason. Oh, there is a new final boss enemy that's super tough.

Right now almost all the achievements are glitched so I've had to get my friend SAM to unlock them, and leaderboards don't seem to work.

If you love the Alien Shooter franchise and want more, go ahead and buy this. Otherwise play the other games first.

I really,really,really like the AlienShooter series，It occupied most of my childhood and most of the rest of it，I bought the PC version as soon as I knew it would hit the shelves in the wee hours of the 7th.Now i pass the game,It's a good process. New monsters, new sound effects, new props,new resolution,weapons optimize,these are all very good.The large turret was equipped with a ballistic,you can aim better.But it sounds more like a machine gun XD,not as shocking as it used to be.Anyway, this series is still great,I like it forever.


But there is another problem, that is the boss.Boss is too weak!Enough firepower but not enough shock.That's the most powerful monster!It will destroy all humans with monsters!But I don't feel that way. I think the most powerful boss in this series is the boss of [Alien Shooter-The Experiment].It's fast enough, powerful enough,one shot one kill
(to the little monster XD....and me).It has two plasma cannons,very fast rate of fire and firepower.There's always a bunch of monsters moving with it, like a monsters king!The screen trembles every time the gun is fired!OMG It's so cool!!! This is also my favorite expansion!!

If there is a dlc, I would like to refer to [The Experiment].Boss has plasma cannons, missile and laser three in one, cannons launch missiles after launch(like a Rocket Nest),use the laser as you approach,and yell from time to time.This should be cool.

Another question is why can't qe switch weapons,it's not convenient.Hope to add.Thank you Sigma team!Thanks for this game.

Its an nice game but too short and very easy.For a longer game and a more challenging experience i suggest you to play it on very hard and i also think that the new turret should get a small improvement because it does small damage and its not that good.I also didn't find any bug or glitch until now.It will also be awesome if Sigma Team adds trading cards.

Original formula with a twist, you can now place turrets to help you in your missions. Graphically and technically best game in the series, it would be my favorite if it wasn't for the ultimate nostalgia connected to Alien Shooter 2, so that one still holds my top spot. A must play for any fan of the series, let's hope they release more games alike, while very short it has some replay value, especially since there are some achievement challenges to work towards.

The 3rd expansion pack to the Alien Shooter game. It's stand-alone, so it doesn't need the original to work. It adds some new music and a new weapon, a turret. You need to use those turrets to clear the levels. The game is great, but it doesn't have the same quality as the original one.

Solid spin-off with a lot of aliens to kill. Maybe little harder than first game but still with good menagement and knowledge you'll still complete it without a trouble. The addition in this one(turrets) are really helpfoul and with good placement will be your main source of damage in the most part of the campaign. There are few new enemies what I appreciate and last level with a boss battle. If someone wants to complete it on the hardest difficulty I suggest completing it on easier difficulty and then in a 2nd playthrought you go on hard, then you know which wall hordes will be coming from and you won't be shocked but rather prepared. Good game for a few hours.

TL;DR: If you liked the original Alien Shooter, have another 5 dollars to spare and ready for a bit new turret-based gameplay than you can safely buy and play. If you need a closer camera similar to the original just change the resolution to the lowest one - the picture quality doesn't really worsen anyway.

Initially, when I saw The Last Hope I considered it another lame remaster of the original to make more money, however, when I looked into description I was surprised to know that The Last Hope is actually a brand new title in the series. I already got confused by graphics identical to the original and general feeling that there is something wrong but decided to give it a go anyway.

So, what can I say about the game itself? Well, it's not bad. It's still similar to a good old classic Alien Shooter but with new turret mechanic. However, it’s not it as there are some changes to the gameplay and most of them are quite mediocre. First of all, while the original levels were more corridor-like and having arenas mostly to the end, here every level has an arena section where you have to fight a large group of monsters. In addition to it, the number of them is usually too high so unless you place all the turrets you have in your inventory, which usually makes the game very easy, arena is unbeatable. Moreover, time-to-kill is similar to Revisited rather than the original, so prepare to do several tiresome shots into high rank enemies even with the powerful weapons. Enemy spawners also look strange, as they continue to spawn enemies without considering their number on the screen, so you can easily run out of ammo by dealing with them. The final level is even worse than in The Experiment as you have tons of powerful enemies and damage soap final boss, so prepare for a very long fight and several restarts.

All in all, the game is fine and can be enjoyable and I could easily finish review on this point but… but I'm just pissed off by the sh*tty attitude of Sigma Team towards the series and its fans. They didn't even bother to remove mobile interface and refine it for the PC, so you will always accidently press either menu or gun change button if you aim at the distance. Gamepad support is basically nonexistent and resolution change does nothing except distancing the camera, so the textures won't seem so outdated on high-resolution monitors. They didn't even fix the major problem of the original interface which required you to look at the small numbers on the edge of the screen to check your ammo and health, moving your eyes from the battlefield, which could end very badly. What's even more ridiculous is that they cannot fix the achievement system for almost a year, so prepare Steam Achievement Manager if you are a hunter. The situation became so bad that they game received profile restrictions from the Steam, aka it doesn't count towards your statistics. And I just… in the game made on 2000s engine, with 100 mb size, with a very basic gameplay you cannot find the source of the problem for a year?! Are you kidding?! Is that so hard to program an in-game timer and write a bunch of "if" lines in the code?! But really, they just don't care, as if they did, they would damn see that survival time starts with 2 hours on the count already!

Moreover, Sigma Team just doesn't even want to learn and develop! It has been 17 years since the original and the only thing you came up with is just a small new turret gameplay, which also turned out to be very mediocre?! Furthermore, you are making the sequel on exact same engine like the original. And you know, the problem is not even the graphics – frankly, I like the sprite graphics of the originals and I want Alien Shooter to stay isometric sprite game as a sort of style but why couldn't you make better textures so the game would seem like it's actually developed in 2020 and not 2002?!

But ok, maybe Alien Shooter formula is so complex and perfect that there is just nothing to add anymore. Haha, write down! New guns, modifications to the guns, alternative fire modes, new locations, destructible environments, new types of enemies, sprites of damaged enemies, new AI behavior, map editor and workshop, multiplayer, and a lot more smaller features… But no, after all this time we just get a semi-addon to the original 20-year-old game! There is so much potential for expansion but they developers just throw it out and continue to copy themselves. Original was about the laboratory – new game is about the laboratory; the dlc to the original had damage sponge boss – let's make even more spongy one; original had RNG survival – let's make another one like that too. In the end it's just the same old song but it also manages to get worse with every passing year.

Now I have a great living example of a type of people that I struggled to define before. It's people who can accidently create a gem with no understanding of what to do with it and when they start to actually think they come up with the dumbest solutions. However, I guess things won't change as Alien Shooter is very popular in mobile sector and I understand why. Seeing tons of enemies on your screen and shooting them into gore meat for 5 dollars on your smartphone is a fun way to spend an hour or two but it's definitely not the game that you would like to see on PC.

In the end, I really want to keep this review purely informational because I just don't know how to rate this game. It's not bad, it's fine, but it's fine not because Sigma Team 2020 did its job well but because Sigma Team 2003 did its job well. But, ok, I enjoyed The Last Hope - it's an fine game and I don't want to worsen its rating but I just can't stand everything that's happening around the series and the developers! The original had so much potential and could end up as a great series of isometric shooters with interesting and fun gameplay but in the end became just a small niche game that some people remember. As for the rest of the series: questionable sequel, lazily made Zombie Shooter, and loads and loads and loads of constant remakes and reissues of the original games to various platforms. It's just very painful to watch a real potential to be wasted so blatantly.
