How to make a good road network for my City.
For some backstory, I've always have had an issue with city layouts and road networks and due to this was never able to get far into the game because of just how frustrating it can get, and with this new economy update I've finally decided to get back into the game. So, can anyone give me any tips for starting out city's roads/layouts and how I can prevent traffic in the long term. Also how could I make a functioning highway system? Every time I make one it seems traffic just gets worse at the entrances of the city, and also how to make good exits for these highways.

Avoid the common traffic mistakes; Here are a few screenshots I hope will help, there are many more available on my profile screenshots tab.

1 - Blocking access to either sides of your city by placing ground level freeways edge to map edg - Instead, Raise your freeways so you can later place parallel roads under them to allow access for pop to cross the freeway without having to get on them.

2 - Placing cargo hubs seaports and airports on through roads - Instead, Put them on a dead end 4-6 or 8 lane 2 way roads with a round about on the end DO not add any intersections anywhere on the port access road and place the building on the side after the roundabout to allow lots of room for traffic to flow through the loop.

3 - Building congested freeway ramps - Try to build compact underpass ramps using fast flowing roundabouts.

4 - THE biggest mistake we all make is not opening free flowing access (bypass) roads on every edge of the map - Instead, place many, MANY, very short 6 and 8 lane roads on every map edge that lead to a 2 or 4 lane perimeter road. Keep the perimeter road very close to the map edges.

Imagine, why get on a freeway just to go a short distance off map or to the other side of the freeway, that would be nuts! Right? So why force your Cims to use freeways not meant for them? This layout will keep your homies off the freeways and leave those important roads for commerce and travel. BONUS! Taxis will now stop clogging your freeways and exits.

Enjoy the game! It gives back to those who have the patience to understand it.

Road hierarchy is the key. You need to utilise all street sizes in correct order to get them flowing as well as they can.

For city entrance, it is worth making several of them as the city grows. Every 1.5-2km along the highway.

Also, ensure that traffic has several routes to get to their destination. Split industry into smaller areas and locate it logically close to highway access and down the road from commercial zone(s)

Use mass transit. Buses for local routes, trams for longer routes, subway and trains for longer distance main lines. Feed these with 2 earlier options. People will change several times during their journey.

People need parking spots for their vehicles, if they don't exist, they won't drive there.
