Taxi invade city
I have a traffic problem with traffic jams because of the thousands of taxis that invade the city while I have bus and tram lines. I can't find a way to reduce this taxi flow. Do you have a solution ? THANKS

1. Connect a bus line to the neighboring cities they are coming from, charging little or no fare.

2. The taxis surge like that after you lay down a lot of new buildings, but will quickly lessen as those new buildings are finished and they have their occupants.

3. Make sure your city has good bus routes to minimize your own citizens from contributing to the problem.

Don't forget the parking spots. If people can't park their cars they won't come in with one.

Also upgrade the roads to support the traffic! I have one huge ring road round the City which has roads leading off into each district. And use roundabouts which help and get rid of the crosswalks that lead into the districts to keep traffic flowing. It also does not happen instantly, normally takes a day or two to sort.

They do seem to be a necessary part of the system and require a lot of entrances to make their paths shorter and reduce bunching.

It is my observation If you add many 6 and/or 8 lane roads leading to the all 4 map edges taxis will balance out making it less noticeable.

2 and 4 lane roads or highways leading off map seem to make it worse.

Do taxis or any other kind of vehicle ever have a route that just goes strait from one edge of the map to another edge of the map? Or do all vehicles come and go from the edge of the map to somewhere on the map itself?

Thank you all for all this information which I will put into action immediately. and for Gneral Tso : Taxis mainly come from outside the map
You can also increase the city-wide taxi fares to the maximum level to disincentivize citizens from using them. It won't eliminate them but it at least reduces their numbers somewhat.

The upcoming economy update is going to introduce the ability to shut off the delivery of services from neighbouring cities which I'm pretty sure includes taxis.

Thank you for the reply. But that's not what I'm asking.

I realize my question was kind of stupid. But what I wanted to know... Is there any traffic that enters from outside of the map and drives to another exit point on the map without stopping at any of the buildings on the map? I was just wondering if this behavior exist. Because it might change how I do some things when trying to clear up traffic jams.

Yes you will see traffic go through your city on the way to the next city.
Easiest to find and track on the freeways.

I sometimes get traffic backed up on my highways. I was wondering if putting a bypass around the traffic jam might cause the through traffic to use that. And help limit the number of vehicles that are backed up. I'm sure this wouldn't fix all my problems. But it might be another tool in the drawer so to speak.

I have never tried anything like that, might be fun to experiment with.
So far I have had the best luck keeping traffic under control on the freeways by using dozens of two way roads leading to the map edges (all four sides), I use mainly 6 or 8 lane two way short roads branching off a two or four lane perimeter road circling the city just a few squares in from the edges then branching from there into the burbs. It also really spreads out the taxi demand and keeps your inner city cars off the freeways, also I elevate my freeways and run parallel roads underneath, again to keep inner city traffic off the freeway and allow free flow without the barriers of ground level freeways.
You can see what i mean in my screenshots posted in my profile.

I implemented all your comments and now I have smooth traffic and an acceptable amount of taxis. Thank you again for your help.

I'll have to check all of that out. I really like the parallel road under the highway part.
