how do you know how much parking you are supposed to need?
In my downtown area I have built probably 10 underground garages by now, in addition to three large lots that people walk on a pedestrian back to the city from. No matter how much I build it never seems to be enough. Cars are creating traffic jams trying to park in obviously full lots. How do i manage this

When you see more thumbs down than stars when you place a parking lot, you have enough parking.

Unfortunately, this indicator doesn't factor in roadside parking.

I wish there were a better indicator.
When you don't have anyone using a parking lot, you have enough parking.
Except the game started out that way... and the cims still don't use parking lots much at all, so...
We don't know.

You don't actually need any parking space, neither on the roads nor in parking lots. (most buildings have inbuilt parking space)

Parking only serves one purpose in this game: to create congestion.

Even with plenty of parking space available IN the city, try to build an empty road in the middle of nowhere, and enjoy traffic jams to get to that single road just to park.

you can remove all parking spaces from the place. And the cims won't care much about it. Most of the cars in the parking lots are just dummies intended to imitate road traffic nad looks good

Good way to make a lot of cash, up those fees to max. You'll be golden.
You just build more of them, or upgrade your public transportation system. Some buildings have more parking spaces, like mixed and low rent, so you can try build more of those. Also parking lots looks great near train stations, harbors and airports, as well as awkward space where you don't want to build any buildings.

If it helps, medium and large lots don't have fences around them, so they are more accessible if placed in a corner, creating slightly healthier traffic flow.

You could try delete all lots, so that citizens just park their car into their pockets. But you either have no parking lot or have enough of them within an area, or things could get ugly.

no way to know truely, guesswork.
you cant litter them around like residential buildings anyway. because carparks re real high noise pollution assests. even higher than commercials, farming, electricity powerplants.

When you look at the (traffic?)indicators (top left) it gives you a number of spaces available v needed. Just like water etc. Not sure achieving the *target" actually does anything for the on-road parking!

Amount of cars on road are terrible. I tried deleting all parking lots and didn't find any problem. Public transport usage slightly increased. Aomparing to amount of people using public transport those in cars are less. I guess, it is possible po play with no parkings, but I want with. So, right now just testing how much it is needed. Built 400 places and adding houses nearby step by step, measuring how much of them using parking, walkable distance and so on... This is the game for me actually. Research, measure, try....

That is not what city needs, that is amount of actually parked. In my city I have 130k people and 7k parked. In a city with 600k people 3k parked.

The problem is just with my downtown. High density does not have built-in parking and the spots on the roads are not enough. After placing a ton of underground parking and the giant parking tower traffic seems to have calmed down and just about everybody is parked but I needed a good 4000 spaces for downtown area alone. I might have made it too dense perhaps?

I have seen a few videos where people had huge downtown’s and I didn’t see parking garage is all over the place. Maybe they were just ignoring the traffic.

High-density buildings have parking, and they are extremely annoying because they clog the outer line. (cars enter one by one.)

I make a lot of money, and I design my cities with alleys face the parking in the alley, add a pedestrian walkway down the side to the actual road.

My current traffic flow at 200k is 93% so it's not killing me atm at least.
