Parking lots causing huge traffic jams
There are certain spots of the city where tons and tons of cims want to park in the same parking lot, and it causes a bigger traffic jam than anything else. Even when I place more parking lots around as a way to give them more options, all parking lots get full, and the traffic jams keep happening.

I don't understand, how am I supposed to deal with this other than simply not building parking lots at all? It seems that, no matter what I do, parking lots either get barely anyone using them, or EVERYONE wants to use them, and then there's a never-ending traffic jam.

Do you have gated community policy in effect? It seems to cause really weird driving behavior with parking lots and any service buildings with parking lots like bus terminals.

No, I don't have any gated communities. Also, bizarrely enough, most of the parking occurs in residential areas instead of commercial or industrial. I'd expect it to be the other way around.

I have noticed that parking lots should not be built directly towar the road. Better to make an alley cut a bit into the area and build the parking along it

Probaply because the residential areas have not as much build in parking. Industy and commercials have parking included.

placing parking spots can be a bit tricky. Try to not have them on big roads better is to place them in side roads and maybe also force direction with one way roads to avoid problems with turning. Also I do not build the extra large parking this one is simply too big to manage the traffic from all that people that want to park on it I usualy go with the medium size.

You see... I do not understand this function at all. Every single resident house has room for parking. This is why they are designed as such. Why didn't they implement those spaces for parking instead of streets and parking lots?

Just put the price of parking up massively that'll shift them and make you lots of money.

I recommend using parking lots on a 2-4 LANE road only so that way cars can pass and the traffic doesn't jam. Using on a SINGLE lane two way is guaranteed jam as your town grows. Plan ahead.

Using parking lots are also best if you use a ROAD that turns and then connects to the parking lot. In real life most parking lots do this. They have a single road that goes tot he parking lot. The parking lot is not EXACTLY on the main road.

It's because you don't have enough parking... Simple as that...

If cims can't find a place to park they will keep circling back over and over again until a parking spot opens up. Which leads to major traffic problems. Build more parking.

Thanks for all the tips, I'll keep those in mind! But as for the comment about there not being enough parking, I'm not too sure about that, because some areas already have tons of parking lots, and still have problems. It feels like I'd have to place an insane number of parking lots just for relatively small areas, because even when I do place more on the outskirts of where everyone wants to park, the cims simply don't use them as much.

Nope, I have twice the parking spots as I require them. So that's not it.

Also, building a long road purely dedicated to parking doesn't solve the issue either, it just clogs the lane that will turn to that alley.

Same issue Inosim. I just deleted all my parking lots and it's as if they served no function to begin with. It has only positively impacted my city I have no debuffs, no more traffic, everything is running smoothly so I don't understand. It's as if the lots served as a prop to portray traffic needlessly.

Build a Busstation infront of a parking lot, then they use the extra lane

If you use the medium parking lots it's not quite as bad. The medium allows entry on 3 sides of the lot so if you place them with roadway along the sides as well as the front they can enter/exit quicker. All the others have fences around them and only allow traffic flow from the front.

I use one way road for parking lots most of the time, but sometimes it's still mashed up. Also the big parking tower is buggy when I relocate it
