how much parking is necessary for medium-high density residential?
Every time i build a few blocks of these i feel like i need to dedicate practically just as much space to parking?

Click on a building, see how many households it can have (I assume that 1 household = 1 parking spot). Then you plan for parking to match that amount. Not everyone will drive and so forth but it's a decent gauge that I use when determining parking needs. If you are attentive and see how the building level up and parking needs increase/decrease you can figure out a good system that works for your needs in your city.

Enjoy.

Start plonking parking down, and when it gets nearly full, repeat the process, but make sure that you have your parking spread between industrial, commercial and residential (oh, and offices, as well). If you don'y like the idea of massive parking, invest in good , extensive and well designed public transport, and then you can concentrate your parking in residential areas.

If you think you have enough, you probably need more. Otherwise you will have endless loops of traffic entering, looping, and exiting parking lots looking for a spot.

I dont know if its because theres parking in commercial and industrial buildings but my people mostly only seem to want to park near medium to high density residential

The real answer is you do not have to build a single parking space. Like your city does not need a single available parking space (although most buildings automatically have them). Principle of Induced Demand doesn't exist in CS2 but then again cars just kind of teleport away after people can't find parking and it's 'magically solved'. So in a sense induced demand kind of exists in the game but just for parking.

I find parking lots are not needed and cause unnecessary pathfinding choke points.

I don't use any and rely on the more than adequate parking already provided in the RICO buildings along with reducing street parking.

Reducing street parking with trees grass or wide sidewalks also forces cars to park in the available assets allowing the game to be considerably faster when you exceed the millions pop levels.

Does nothing for realism but that's just one of the many workaround you need if you want to get past the sub million pop cap.
