I don't use mods (yet) so they were dormant in playsets that I don't use. I unsubbed from all of them fully, leaving only an official playset with the 4 pdx region packs & I haven't had a crash yet.
while reading your post it reminds me.
When the game released i got recommended to change Nvidea settings if you have a high end card such as the RTX4090. becaus my GPU didn't got used fully only 30 or 40%, needed to change in the Nvidea panel a setting that would increase the use of the GPU and take away CPU power.
I didn't have this enabled last time. Not sure the crashing happen becaus i didn't enabled it/or it started happening after a certain update. Maybe it's just random. who knows...
1. Copy any save games to a back up folder on your desktop
2. Uninstall the game.
3. Reboot
4. Make sure all caches are cleared and (if you're savvy enough) ensure that CS2 is no longer in the Registry using Reg Edit.
5. Go to Paradox Mods website and delete all mods and playsets.
6. Reinstall the game
7. On the paradox mods website, create a new playset, and add Skyve to it.
8. Boot the game, go to the paradox mods page in-game and make the playset you just created your active playset.
9. Exit and reboot the game.
10. Install Skyve following instructions. NOTE: Installing Skyve to the recommended drive location caused me to BSOD. It seems like you must choose the same drive as the game is installed on AND, I've had better luck installing it to the root directory (DriveLetter:\.). Program Files caused a BSOD, every time. Installing on a different drive than the game was on caused a BSOD every time.
11. Once Skyve launches, switch back to CS2 which will be running in the background. Exit the game.
12. Return to Skyve and set up your automatic back ups. Create a manual back up immediately. You'll want to back up all files. I set things up to create a back up every time I quit the game and such as to retain as many back ups as possible.
13. In Skyve, begin adding mods. Checking periodically that you can still A) launch the game and B) get into a map. With each successful test, creating a Skyve back up so that you have a restore point. I RECOMMEND NOT ADDING THE JAPAN PACK NOR ANY OF THE DECAL PACKS. I can't prove anything but I think the Decal packs increased instability overall. Add only what you need to enjoy the game well enough. I have MoveIt, Anarchy, Traffic, Tree Controller, Better Bulldozer and a game map along with all the Region packs except Japan. I think L8n Everywhere (a dependency mod) is throwing a Null error but so far, it doesn't seem to have a serious impact....though the comments section suggests I could try downgrading to a previous version if needed.
14. Finally, once satisfied, start a new game and save it to create the cache directory where save games go.
15. Copy your saves in there.
16. Launch the game, load your save and cross your fingers that it will work.
Note that this is going to take you hours not minutes. Note that if you're stuck on loading screens for long periods of time of no apparent activity once you start adding region packs/mods, this is normal and does not indicate the game is frozen. A 20 minute load time just to get to main menu would not surprise me.
These are the steps that (it would appear) worked for me. I don't understand why this worked and I would never be willing to promise you that it will work for you. If this makes your issues worse, bear in mind that while I'm pretty good working my way around a computer, I have no technical training and will not be able to help you troubleshoot. So pursue this at your own peril. I would suggest, if you're only crashing every couple hours, to suck it up and live with it. Fiddling with it could make your game unplayable as it did mine. What is clear is that this game is a patchwork held together by tape at the moment and is not at all stable. Building on top with DLC/mods/region packs really seems to reveal the poor foundation on which these additions rest.
Not a terribly accurate term, but we used it for cases like this; when a proggie gets updates and hotfixes and, worse - mods.
When the proggie is this complex... think of it as going psychotic. It's in mental flux. Unstable. And it always will be. It's just a matter of HOW unstable.
Nice, cudos on having the Windows know how and patience to work through these issues - I think you're doing better then many gamers. Just too bad CO can't provide a stable foundation and their development quality assurance is obviously lacking.
Doing regedits are nooo fun...
Edit: city isn't big at all. Maybe 10k people
