issues with game crashing during first loading screen

the game will open, get past the splash screens, and then on the first load, the darkest blue wheel, the innermost one, will get half way, the game will freeze, and then crash. No report, just started happening. have verified install, updated drivers, installed latest net 7.0, hell, ive even uninstalled, and it still persists.

Yep having the same issue, I have 176 hours in game and have given it a chance as I believed that underneath all the issues there was the foundations of a good game but after waiting half a year for CO to fix the game I have finally lost patience and will just stick with Cities Skylines!

Same here. Tried removing all mods, uninstalling, veryfying etc. Nada.

My game today only start until the loading screen after the "Asset Importer" mod update and show crash report. The ultimate cause was that the mod "Stair and Path Assets Packs" was deleted by the modder, but the custom assets were still in the folder. I deleted everything in the "Custom Assets" folder and everything went back to normal after that.

what hanne said I have seen works for many. What worked for me was going into userdata, locallow, Colossal Order, Cities 2, .cache, and then deleting the Mods folder. Of course it nukes your mods, which I can only assume is the underlying problem itself. It will recreate the folder on launch, but I was finally able to load into the menu.

same problem, I reinstalled game , uninstalled mods and nothing helped

it has been an issue for me as well, but i find if i dont click or hit any buttons the game eventually finishes loading but if i click the blank screen or hit keys it'll crash and windows will say it stopped responding.

I can only get to the start menu about 50% of the time. That's as far as the game gets without locking up my whole system. I have 176 hours of gameplay logged and have owned the game since day 1 of release. Now, I can't even play it. I sent CO several emails that were all ignored. I have followed every suggestion and tried every trick to get C2 to play...it will not. Uninstall/wipe cache/delete mod folder/clean registry/reinstall...nothing works. I have an i7 system with 64GB RAM and a 3080 video card. There is no hardware reason this should not run. It worked well enough to get 176 hours in at least.

Exactly same issue here, dark blue circle loads halfway, black screen and game crashes. No mods installed and looking at others, not even reinstall will help this. Very strange.

E: Found the culprit. After all, I used to play with mods from Thunderstore before Paradox Mods was a thing, to make the game work again, just remove all the mods installed from Thunderstore (in my case BepInEx)
