So size matters. LOL
Traffic lights are useful to break up traffic going into a roundabout so that other vehicles aren't stuck waiting forever to enter.
Otherwise roundabouts are really good for intersections with lots of traffic trying to make left turns and cross the opposing traffic lane but that can also be solved with using jug handles for turning.
You can do it better with traffic lights more times than not. Once of course mods work, and traffic manager is there to let you use traffic lights right. Not the base game night traffic lights in the game now.
You can have left turn only. Time one way long or shorter etc.
I use roundabouts very little anymore. They just aren't worth it 90% of the time.
If it's not busy sure. But if it's not busy why put one in.
I never use because it's not CONTROL.
I tend to build my own larger roundabouts if volumes are high. They still clog up but are a more realistic representation of what is normally built, certainly here in the UK.
-Very high volume
+very unbalanced directions; such as most cars going one way from one direction, therefore not creating any gaps for another.
Just like in real life (oddly) these Cims seem to gradually learn them and use them properly. You just must eliminate all crosswalks and lights in sight of each one. And more importantly match the incoming roads and styles. 8 and 6 lane roads and 4 lane highways work best. Along with the above delete parking anywhere near one.
All of my highway off ramps have at least 4 bouts with the average 6 when you include the subdivision entrances on each end.
Match lanes, for example to make the bout large add one 8 lane road first, then add three 2 lane roads at the 90 degree points. Now you have matched in an out lanes more closely and cleaned up crosswalks and stoplights, and the Zoom begins. Be creative with road types and lanes. Big roads are best.
I'm closing in to 800k very quickly and credit the perfect traffic in a dizzying amount of roundabouts (pun intended) for assisting constant growth.
Great tips here.
Is it best to add one when needed by starting off with the little one? Or if you see the need to just lay down the biggest one?
However, I go big from the get go. It's very hard to make them bigger later.
When I get home I'll post a single screenshot in 800k city with around 12 of them spinning everywhere.
I use 4 lane highways along with roundabouts joined together and they take on the highway properties. So don't waste time fiddly drawing one.
