Bridge OVER the shipping route. Not through the ships. You need to be higher.

What I used to do when I played it was delete the shipping route, and then build the bridge. You can then place a narrower shipping lane between the pillars. Height doesn't matter in most cases if you cant get the damn columns wider that the shipping line.

How would I go about that?

I assume you know how to use the road elevation tool?

There is a hot key for road elevation. If you press page up then this will bring the height up and page down to lower it. Page up/down is located on the middle section of your keyboard. between backspace and Num Lock.

You can also specify the height directly on the road tool. It works that same way as it does for creating tunnels, which is another way that you can cross a waterway without blocking or deleting the shipping route. Before you get to the water, take the road down to 050 feet or so, then continue your road. When you get to the other aide, bring it back to zero feet.

That is the way I do it but I start at the deepest part of the waterway near the center and make a short straight tunnel a length matching what the game will allow at that spot. Then I send both ends out to the land separately.

It is the least frustrating way for me certainly for the more fidfly train tunnels.
