How to import a heightmap into a map editor?
Did it work for anyone?
And where do you get maps from? terrain.party doesn't work for me.

I did everything as in the video, but i had no success.
I have tried it, but i'm doing something wrong when importing. :(

Here is a another tutorial video.

The instructions on the video from Timeister work fine. Simple and easy. ...now the map editor itself may take just a wee bit of time and effort to sort out.
Ya https://heightmap.skydark.pl/# works for me but I cant get my world map to load correctly. I make it greyscale, 4096x4096 and 16 bit but it always comes out distorted with extremely raised heights. Not sure if Im doing something wrong with the world map but the height map is greyscale, 4096x4096 and 16 bit to and 57.3km size and it works fine and was able to port over my map that way but I just have no world map with it which sucks.

As for https://terrain.party/ I could not get this working because when I try to make the rar it comes up empty with no maps in it and just has a readme saying it couldnt make the map files(I was trying to do Cape Coral FL and Miami FL).

And as for https://terraining.ateliernonta.com/ I mean to me this is just a scam because It requires an API token and links you to a site that requires you to give out your credit card info, F*** that that's just sketchy.

The problem with this site, is the output size.
Is there a setting on the site somewhere, for 4096 or did you manually upscale it?
I can only get 1081x1081 by default.

But, with a 57.3km 1081 resized to 4096 and a 14.3km resided to 4096, they import and stitch together nicely, but less detail due to initial resolution.

The terraining.ateliernonta one, I share your sentiment. I know this outputs the correct sizes out of the box though, but I'm not giving out my card details for this :P
Ok, let me share what I have done to maybe help you guys out.

I used the skydark site, pulled in a map area of approximately 14 km.

I then brought the .png into AdobePhotoshop and used an AI upscaler (Topaz Gigapixel) to upscale it. You could also use the SuperZoom function in Photoshops Neural Filters, I just prefer the Topaz one personally.

Note: Topaz allows you to do multiples of resolution, so I chose 4x which multiplied the original resolution by 4, and the map was at that point just a smidge too large. So I resized using the normal resize filter and selected 4096 x 4096

All AI upscalers add some artifacts to the image, in this case it was a grid that created a bunch of weird topography, so I put on a Gaussian Blur of 3.4 pixels and this cleared it right up.

Next, and this one is important for the height data, I added a Levels layer, and dragged the middle slider to darken the overall image. I chose 0.74 as the middle value. The terrain was still a bit too steep along the coastal edges, but the mountains looked pretty close to perfect.

I am going to retry grabbing the map with a lower ocean depth and see if that corrects the steepness of the coast, if not, I can at least deal with it in its current form.
A Little further refinement of the process. I think I might almost have it. Instead of using levels in photoshop, I messed with both the water depth (set to 5m) and the height scale (set to 40%) within the heightmap generator itself. This has yeilded a close result. I think doing 30 or 35% might get it right on the money.

One thing I did notice, is that you can't actually put in 14.3 km, the lowest setting is 17.28 km. This scale makes things off a bit as far as land sizing goes. But I am going to give my map a whirl after I have implemented the 30% change.

I'll keep you guys posted.

Ya I use photoshop 2021 to scale it to the correct size and honestly it comes out fine its just like I said the world map doesnt seem to work right. I think its because of the site and the way it works. Technically the entire map is the entire square on this site so It has no world map to generate anyway.

And I did just test it to see if I HAD to use 57.3km and I dont you can use whatever size so if you make it smaller it will provide more detail.
Just a quick update. I am a GIS student, and love city builders, and while watching the second video I didn't catch that it was a mapbox api, I assumed, as you guys did, that it was potentially a scam and just disregarded. However, when I looked at the github for the project, and realized it was mapbox they were needing an API key for, I put mine in. The quality of the maps is far superior (because they automatically download in the size(s) necessary and align seamlessly) in game. I have had a mapbox account for well over a year for my GIS classes. Mapbox, if you research is a legitimate company and does all kinds of things with their map data (integrations into GPS, GIS, even the Government uses them for projects). So, I think it's worth it to give it a shot.
I used ttps:/terraining.ateliernonta.com/ as per timeister's video but when it gets to importing the worldmap and heightmap in the editor, nothing shows up at all 🤷‍♂

*edit. I figured it out. The name of the folder 'Heightmaps' is case sensitive. I had it as 'heightmaps'. Changing it to an uppercase 'H' solved it.
