Modders BEWARE - Paradox Mods
I posted this on the news post but I thought more people might see it if I post it here as well since my comment was on page 15.

Anyways, always read the fine print. Anything you upload to Paradox Mods is then owned by Paradox along with the rights to sell it without cutting you in later down the line should they so desire.

They say it's for the good of the console players but as always it's just all about the money with this game. I urge modders to be cautious when it comes to Paradox Mods. I have modded for CS1 and I personally will not be supporting the CS2 modding platform.

I didn't read the entire EULA for the game, but it might be the case that any mod you upload anywhere belongs to them. IIRC the EULA says something like "by making your mod available," which looks like it is left intentionally vague. What I understand from it is uploading the mod anywhere, not just PDX mods, makes them theirs to exploit however they want, forever.
without actually taking it to court and hashing out the arguments it's all a big question mark, and the most plausible and "truthful" and closest known precedents of previous similar cases must be considered.

That would be that this game is licensed to be played, not "sold to the buyer."
and that Blizzard Entertainment vs Valve DOTA legal case deeming that the assets weren't property of the company -- now before you jump in and say "but you said they do own it!"-

Yes, the legal case is what got these clauses put into the terms and agreements, they've never actually been tested to my knowledge, but the precedent set was still that the EULA was upheld to its word, spirit, and more importantly: wording.

-- This means the most likely end outcome of a case would be that... the -wording- is upheld again... which means...

...Mods are usable by the companies.

- again it's guesswork, but judges don't like to break precedent set.

So that all said:
Paradox most likely will view any asset which enters into their game as a model, or code change, as a "Mod for their game" and in compliance with the terms, yes.

Precedent where? A precedent in the US means nothing in the EU courts, for example. It can only be informative.

Well they're both US companies so yes US I guess.

Are you confused? :) Blizzard vs Valve had their court in the US. But the precedent it sets is only for the US. It will have nothing to do with PDX vs <insert-modder-in-eu>.

That case is why the terms and conditions about "What's made is ours"
it's relevant in that sense, and it's the closest case we've had to that being tested.

So no, I'm not confused, you're just not understanding how interwoven everything will end up being.

- Also why would the modder be from the EU? bias much? you know modders exist all over the world and they all agree to the same terms?

I love Cities Skylines, but lately I've been hating Paradox. It is at these times that a new SimCity could come to scare Paradox. :steamfacepalm:

I gave modder in EU as an example. The point is any legal precedent set in the US doesn't mean anything for the rest of the world.

Sure, well until it's taken to court and battled out it'd be impossible to say if Paradox terms are truly illegal or not.

Yeah definitely feels like it was rushed out by the publisher. Doesn't seem like the mod tools were ready for release either going off of how many posts have been complaining about them...

Dominos Pizza is a case-in-point. While touring his stores around the U,S,, the manager of one store showed the CEO unique bread. Small, bite-sized pieces of pizza dough dusted with Parmesan cheese. The guy who had come up with the recipe did not receive a penny, because the tasty treat was made with company resources on company time.

The CEO copyrighted the recipe. They're called Bread Bites and are found in all Domino stores.
The same clause is included in the EULA of minecraft and I'd venture to suggest its a good thing. I mean if your mod is good enough for them to include and then maintain it's features, isn't that a good thing for the mod creator? I doubt the modder who created redstone thinks begrudges it's inclusion into the base game.
