How to fix traffic jams at cargo ports?
How do you fix those crazy traffic jams at cargo ports? Oddly, one of mine doesn't cause any but all others do. I've already tried a lot but nothing really works except for creating very long stupid-looking winding streets. With some cargo train stations, it's similar.

Had the same problem. For my cargo port I made a two lane one way street to create traffic flow, and limited only one cargo line going into and from that harbor.

I had a pretty big traffic problem with a cargo rail hub too. I had two cargo lines going to and from that hub (each lines had 3-4 trains). I built another train cargo hub nearby and transferred 1 of the 2 lines to the other hub. In the transport screen, I also reduced the number of trains for each line to the minimum. (I think 2 trains per line is the lowest)

Both of cargo train and harbors have either a 2 or 3 one way route and is connected to a highway with a direct route outside the city.

To sum this up, reduce the number of cargo vehicles per line to a minimum and have direct access routes to a major highway that leads out of the city if possible.

So far I haven't had any traffic backing up after making these changes.

Hope this helps.

you dont have to fix anything , because the game plays for its self. What ever problem you think , you have , outside connection will fix that for you , and economy system , and fake simulation.Dont worry

It's likely that:
1. Normal car traffic use said roads as well make sure they have better ways to get to their destination (typically faster roads will do that is straight and not curving).
2. That you've connected it up horky-borky so that cars drive in and out the wrong way (it was a.. spectacular problem in CS1 too).

If O is Outgoing and I is incoming and you have a road that goes like this

<----------------
---> O --> I --->

Outgoing will block Incoming thus slowing it all down.

What you want is ---> I --> O ---> and you preferably want it as a one way road that only has a single lane.

Observe the building to see where it enters and exits.

If you haven't deleted the port and and then re inserted it try that, as the fix that was sent out for this did not work on every port, some had to be demolished and re built

I have about 5 cargo rail hubs and 3 ports in my city of ~170k pop, and I've observed that whenever I zone a new district with lots of commercial, the nearest cargo hub will see a lot of traffic from all the shops sending their delivery trucks to pick up goods from the cargo hubs. But after a while, the traffic will dissapear as all the shops have gotten their stuff, leaving only the occasional truck coming and going.
I also have some cargo rail lines connecting the various hubs in my city, and those carry a lot of goods. So the various goods are distributed throughout my city mostly via rail, and the trucks only make pickups from the nearest hub.

So if you see continous traffic issues at cargo hubs, you should build more of them scattered throughout the city to better distribute the goods and alleviate the bottlenecks.

I've got a bunch of screenshots on my profile showing the different cargo hubs. It also helps to have roads on both sides, because trucks will sometimes enter from the other side if possible and faster.

There is a two lane road that leads to my cargo port. I just made a six lane road in front of my cargo port long enough to accommodate 3 free lanes to go straight and Uturns and then three lanes for the traffic trying to enter the cargo port.

You will also see bottlenecks in traffic when zoning new residential areas.

I recently zones a few high density residential that also caused some congestion at the junction that leads to my industrial area. Guess from an influx of people moving in. Once the buildings were built the traffic seems to recede.

I think at some points in city expansion having traffic congestion is invariable.

There are two entrances / exits at the harbor.
Don't use the same road for them. Have one road for the left entrances going to the left, and one road for the right entrance going right.

Thanks for this tip! I did that and it seems to have worked. Will continue having an eye on it, though.

That was my idea, too. Same procedure as in CS1. However, at first it seemed like it didn't work. To the contrary, it seemed like making everything worse. However, demolishing the worst port and rebuilding it might have worked, now. Might try that with the other ones and cargo train hubs, too.

One additional question, though: I don't need a harbor with rail connection AND a train hub closeby, right? The harbor should be enough as it also has the rail connection, shouldn't it?

According to the feedback i receive, i need to drop and place it back.
It does work for a few minutes as of course all your traffic will reset.

Generally speaking, most problems i have with game bad trafic is my fault for not keeping constantly rebuilding all my ports, bus stations and parking lots to avoid traffic buildup.

It is very normal for a town of 170k pop to need 5 cargo harbors. It just works. I love this game and colossal order.

Just check my post at Reddit https://www.reddit.com/user/Candid-Anteater211/comments/1b4d7ed/managing_the_traffic_at_cargo_stations/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button
You need to create a road similar like this one, so both entries of the port can be used equally.

It does appear that more = better in terms of cargo. I had a city in 300k range and had 2 cargo ports, but in one basic location. It was designed to cover a large metro area. Until I distributed more cargo hubs and started connecting them to my harbor did I solve the issue.
