CS2 Is Running Hot CPU Temps 95c and Above
Hi Everyone,
I recently built a new rig to play current games including CS2 when it started bogging down from the large city I created. So, I am curious if anyone else has monitored CPU usage and temps.
My Rig: Dubbed Greg-anator

Case: Hyte Y60
Mobo: Asus Prime Z790-p
CPU: i7 13700k
GPU: AsRock Radeon RX 7900 XTX
Storage: NVMe M.2 1TB
RAM: G Skill Ripjaws s5 6000 x4 16GB/64GB
CPU cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 Halo
Case fans: Thermaltake X3
PWR: Corsair 850w
Case Acc: Hyte Y60 12.6 in LCD screen
2nd HDD: 500 GB

I've tested CS1 with over 3k in assets - 59c - 65c
Avatar Frontier of Pandora on Ultra settings 1080p saw 85c max
All other titles like Diablo 3 and 4 played in the 62c range.

Am I the only one?

Also the loading/holder mechanism of the 12/13 gen intel CPU is aperantly garbage. I replaced it with a contact frame to get equal pressure on all edges instead and my dark rock pro aircooled 13900k then ran 6-7°C cooler alone for this reason which is insane. After also changing the thermal paste to a high-performance thermal paste i got anoter 4-5° So intotal my system runs 10-12°C cooler now then when I initialy build it.
Ditto here. Your temps are conservative, the higher the TPM the better it works.

That stock clamp bends any CPU it touches creating a hot spot and bubble in the center that no cooler can touch.

I use the Thermalright contact frame in all the LGA 1700 systems I build by default. Half the price or less than the one by Thermal Grizzly. Watch the GN review of both. Installation of the TR is easy vs the fiddly unreliable TG.

Speaking of installation, do not attempt it unless you know what you are getting into. One slip and your MOBO can be toast if anything hits those pins. I have installed dozens of them and only destroyed one MOBO, yeah one too many

I want to continue to thank Everyone for your thoughts and recommendations. It's been 12 years since I built a PC at a time when I gamed a lot. Backdrop to the air cooler choice: I originally purchased an id-cooling AIO 240 in the $60 range...a couple coworkers have them on rigs slightly less powerful than this. Mid shipment from Amazon hauled do to fraud on my account, ugh. I basically had all my components but the AIO. So I half stepped my research and got the air cooler. Lessons learned. I have no budget but I don't want to just throw money away.

What's everyone's suggestions for an AIO?

This game is CPU intensive.

That being said, if temps get this high, this is a sign that cleaning of the insides of the case is required, or that your device's cooling ability is not the best, such as due to bad cooler, warm room, bad airflow, etc.

I myself would use a water cooler.

My 14900K rarely gets past 70C in this game.

Your i7-13700k needs a minimum of a 250 watt dual-tower Air Cooler with three fans (140mm). Your 212 halo is rated for 200watts.

Be careful of AIO water coolers. The water will evaporate over time and cause heating issues. It you want a water cooler, then build a custom loop, so you can top-off the water to keep air out of the system and keep cooling more under control.

Also, your GPU can draw 400-watts easily. So add to that the 250watts of 13700k, you are looking at over 650watts. Plus another 50% transient spikes from the PSU, means you need a 1,000 watt, tier 1 PSU minimum.

Also, follow this advice. It is very important to have one of these Good advice for AMD CPUs as well):

Dump all of your SSDs. HDDs are too slow anymore. Even SATA SSDs are too slow. 3.0 x4 nvme or better only. You may need more than one, so look over your motherboard carefully.

Don't forget quality fans for the case. You need to move air in and out as quick as possible. My 7900 XTX OC runs 500-watts at 80C - 85C and I have to clean it every month or it starts getting too hot. A very light dusting on your cooler can raise temps by 5C easily.

I have a set of anti-static brushes and canned air to keep things clean monthly.

Aside from faster loading speeds, an HDD is not going to improve anything in the game. So that's a bunch of hot air :). Heck a sata SSD will do just fine too.

I have the Cooler Master MasterLiquid ML240L V2 RGB it works for my Ryzen 9 7900 pretty well. In my Hyte y60 case I placed it in the side position. The top position provided less cooling than I expected to get in the Hyte y60.

I'll look into that one. Do you like your Y60? Love mine so much I got the aftermarket LCD screen on Amazon.

Have you mounted the fans correctly so the front fans push air into the pc and the back fans push it out? Also are the fans ramping up when temps increase?

My cpu sits at a comfy 60°C range even tho the gpu below it gets up to a crisp 96°C.. but it does that on many games.
85°C for Avatar seems a bit much too.. so I'd check first if all the fans are working as intended, pointing the right way and the fan curves are set up properly
My setup is correct, just not enough clearly. I will be upgrading.

Well, this game amongst a handful of others are renowned for turning your PC into a toaster.
So, I wouldn't upgrade unless you really feel like it's necessary to run other games better as well.. Seriously. It's not worth it.
CS2 is not worth dumping a lot of cash into a new PC, 'cos the game is barely functional as is.

This game loads CPU a lot. I mean a lot. I just give you my data point. I game on a PC that I use for professional work, so it's not really a gaming rig by a long short. It has AMD 7980X CPU and Nvidia 4090 GPU. This CPU has 64 cores/128 threads. When the game runs one or two threads are at 100%, and ALL other threads are at 35%-50% load. The CPU alone pulls 350W of power. This is just crazy any way you look at it. I have AIO cooler from Corsair and it keeps the CPU in acceptable range - 60C-70C most of the time, maximum is 85C. I suggest you consider good AIO cooler, it should help.

I noticed that too after the fact. I'm getting 4 cores running hot while the rest were in the 50c area power consumption seems to be lower... I'll continue to monitor that

I have been looking over your built setup and have a few minor questions.

How many additional case fans are you using and do you have any mounted in the top of the case?

In addition, the CPU cooler you are using is a good one for most gaming. But not CS2 at its current state because the game isn't optimized and will put heavy load on your CPU. Therefore, I would recommend switching to a liquid cooler by Cooler Master. Either 240 mm radiator or a 360 mm radiator.

I am running 6 fans out of ten I believe. I'm looking at a couple AIO's in 360mm category. I'll need up case fans as well.

Yeah i love it, sadly when i was looking i did look for the snow white edition. If i did want that one i had to wait for 3 months or so before i could get it in my country. Non of the shops here had it at that moment, only the black edition.

i do not have the add on LCD screen. Maybe i will get one in the future.

For the fans i have 2 at the bottom as a in take, 3 at the top as out take, 1 at the back as outtake. and the water cooler is in the side position as a intake. Intake means airflow is going in the case and outtake is going out the case. For me this works perfect.

So yes i am really happy about the Hyte y60. I did look at the Hyte y70 but did not like the price of it. And again i had to wait for about 3 months before i could get it in my country.

Good to hear and you here is a video from Gamer Nexus talking about liquid cool radiator mounting that you might find useful. Also, please for give the age of it since I wasn't able to find a more up-to-date one for you.

I too looked at that Y70 but they are on back order or it could be had for nearly double the price at this time. Um...Nope. I like the sound of your fan configuration. Next weeks project. As for CS2, it does perform very well on my new rig minus the known issues. I'll check back in next week with the results. and I do love my black on black case.

I'm talking in general. I commenting on his rig. not this game specifically

With that said, I assume the OP plays more games than just CS2, so the advice is still solid. especially if he is buying new drives. There is no sense in wasting money on a HDD or old SATA SSDs anymore. Even consoles have moved away from HDDs.

An AIO is a closed loop and no, it does not need to be refilled, if it does need to be refilled, it's faulty and not properly "closed". Then it becomes a matter of warranty.

They absolutely will need refilling (or replacing) as water evaporates through the tubing as it is porous. It will be fine up to warranty time (usually 5-years), so there is no support for AIOs at all. they are disposable. They are really a waste of money and you will need to replace or hack the AIO to be usable for a long period of time.

But if you check your heavily used AIO in 5-years, you will notice it is about half full of coolant. YMMV

But I used to get the AIO all of the time in the early days, and now I get so many calls from systems I built for friends and family (and their friends and family), that their rigs are crashing all of the time. Of course, they don't call will in crashes once in a while, they wait until it crashes by the minute. LOL Now the CPU is toast.

Now, I only use custom water cooling or dual tower air coolers. I know and can see the water levels are fine on custom cooling.

I no longer buy AIO water cooling. It isn't worth the headaches. In fact, I don't even use custom water cooling. It is just a PITA when you upgrade your system and need new custom water blocks every couple years. I'd rather buy better air flowing cases with better fans. I can reuse both fans and cases year after year.
