Cities Skylines 2 keeps CRASHING (Feb 2024)
First off, I have an excellent computer. It's brand new and the only thing on it is CitiesSkylines2. It's running on windows 11 and there is plenty of available space on the computer. I started a new city two months ago. Everything was going great until today. I noticed steam did some automatic updates to the game when I started. (I don't know if that messed everything up).

Well, I played it for about an hour or so. Everything was great. I saved and exited. Once I returned to the game, I noticed it started to crash within the first minute or so. It seems the quicker I move around, the quicker the crash. In other words, if I move around there is a crash to desktop. There are zero error messages or warnings. I opened another city and played around with it, but everything appeared okay. It was just that one city-- the one I've been working on for two months.

Some of you might say it's related to the graphics. But the game was playing fine with those graphic settings. And it has nothing to do with my population. My population has been at 12,000 for about a month now. I've just been using the past month to clean up the city and make it look nicer.

I've tried so many things. I played with the frame rate. I checked for windows updates. I restarted the computer multiple times. I tried opening the game through other means. I checked the performance and compatibility of the game. Nothing worked. I'm all out of ideas.

Please help me. I'm pulling my hair out. I don't want to start a whole new city especially when I've been working on this one for 2 months.

Many people have this problem at the moment. I experienced it yesterday. After several hours of playing time, the game shuts down without a report. Even if you have a new PC or you have upgraded drivers.

Have you tried loading the city and doing absolutely nothing for a few minutes? Not even moving the camera? I've had the same kind of crash once or twice and it helped to let the game settle for a bit after loading the map

You have to wait for the first paid DLC. Maybe devs will fix it!

The above will help you drill down to find out why the game crashes and then, if its not obvious, you can google more accurately to try and get it fixed.

Its not an issue for everyone, I myself have been fine. However, from time to time, I have to verify the game files. Its the only game I really need to do it on and it seems to work for me. Note that when mine starts to crash, it doesn't need to have an update or anything. Somehow, this games core files are more easily corrupted for some reason. After the verification it then works fine

I also noticed this and noticed worse simulation speed since the patch. It seems like windows 11 is no longer in "game mode". ryzen 7 5800 cpu 70% gpu 3060 35%, still the game is slow and sluggish. it does not feel like it is trying anymore. It is using Vram instead of leaking videomemory to game mode ssd utilisation or what not. i think this is a presorting towards console release. On release gpu was 100%. after patch 1.18 it was cpu at 100%, i think they messed around and somehow made it even worse

At around 80 hrs game time without crashing before (vanilla gameplay) , I sudden had game crashes, I have updated my graphics drivers and have been playing 6hrs straight without a crash.

I honestly think the file is corrupted. How do you fix a corrupted file?

It is not just you OP, normal occurrence for the game, no matter the device used.

Sometimes it can play for hours with no issue, and then you have times where it crashes every few minutes...

The only workaround is to save very often.

Applications will very rarely push even individual cores to 100%, let alone the whole CPU.

Yes, I do agree performance seems worse after the last patch.

I had the "to desktop" crash on all three of my CS2 capable computers since day 1 but since the patch no crash on any of them since patch day, all of them running 24/7 and all now big city faster and drawing 30% less power. Awesome, best patch yet.

I assume I have just been lucky given all the posts here, but I suspect most of the crashes now are hardware conflicts or corrupt Steam files. I believe the game is fixed.

Or worse, leftover trash from long forgotten unofficial mods you did not remove properly.

The first thing I would do is save your current game(s) and then do a re and re of Steam then the game. That can do no harm but must be the next step in troubleshooting. If that no workee start diagnosing hardware. But you gotta start with Steam and the game.

I didn't have any crashes before the patch. Today my game crashed while saving and now the entire save is gone. Time to put the game away for a while.

just gave it a try since december 23.... game is still broken as intendet with not working services, busses missing assigned stations etc.... testet the same with mods and game startet crashing.... whatever they did, it renderd the modders work useless to my guess to push the ppl to their useless modthingy instead of steam workshop

See post above. Clean Steam.

I verified integrity and made sure my graphics drivers were up to date (which they were). That's not it. I had zero issues until last patch now it won't run 2 minutes without a CTD
