To be fair, the basic idea of a city simulator is asking a lot of any system. I'm not mad it slows, that is to be expected.
Really, it needs to be the core of the software. the biggest shortcoming of CS1 & 2 is that is is built on a general purpose game engine, which has tons of overhead.
To get close to a million or more will take some very creative code.
UEBS 2 (ultimate epic battle simulator 2) pulls off some impressive numbers. But that's just basic troops in a battle, not citizens all doing different things, cims in CS are more complex and carry more bytes per cim. But in UEBS 2, I have had battle sof 10+ million troops.
They are doing it all on the gpu. But it is another Unity game. perhaps they should team up with C.O.?
Actually, I am somewhat impressed C.O. has done this much. This is not an easy thing to pull off, they get a lot of hassle for it too like some think there is a "make perfect software" button or something.
Really, it's amazing any of this works at all.
But I think we are still another 10 or more years away from a city sim that can smoothly do a million or more. It's too much to ask of a common home system.
And there are still TONS of aspects of a city that we don't have the horsepower to simulate on one home system. It's not just about population. What about structural physics? REAL disasters. I think I'd rather have a 100k city with real tornado damage, than millions as it is now.
Even after all this time, we have still only seen the tip of the iceberg as to what could be simulated in a city. We could get hyper-detailed and add in some physically accurate storm drainage too, that should bog down the cpu more.
The problem is the game isn't slow enough! :P
Limit fps, lowest option for low smooth picture is 24.
Set the option on the bottom, the one controlling frames in queue to ON, making it 1 frame max in queue.
Set energy to max performance
If you have slow ram, disable using the ram as extra video memory. Beware, this causes crashes when using to much memory on the card
Check energy scheme of pc, Set to max performance
Check cpu fan, Set to 100%
Check gpu fan, Set to 100% at 60degrees
In the game Set everything lower as you go. You will be throttling all the way down. I have found nothing actually makes it a lot better. Disabling shadows, clouds and such mad a bit of a dent but not much. As the city grows even more, eventually the pc will stall.
In my case I have noticed pathfinding fails cause simulation to stall. If one garbage truck crosses 4 lanes at once on a highway, they still do so after the winterpatch, all traffic slows and this slows simulation. This game is really rotten like that. Busses not being able to leave busstation because it was designed by someone that should not be allowed near a computer? Busses will wait for those pesky cims to cross the street until simulation breaks all together.
Do remember that intersections are not optimized and are not able to handle large quantities of traffic. The roundabout fails too. You need to make alot of ramps for the highway, make sure there are no jams.
After a bit of fiddling I can say cargo harbors are not usable, busstations too. Should be avoided. Do not use electric vehicles anywhere. Make sure you plan traffic well because traffic will leave highway and take a shortcut even if it means entering a jam in the city.
Got my city to 412k. I do love certain aspects af the game, but traffic ai is making me nauseated at the moment. I am looking at intersections messing up, roundabouts failing because oncoming traffic is to scared to enter, cargo harbors with infinite queues, busstations that fail no matter how much dedicated exits and lanes you make. This game is so broken and will choke all the fun out of it. Last night I spend 3 hours redesigning a huge highway intersection, executed well I must say only to see garabge trucks crossing 4 lanes at once when 2+2lanes become 4. I wanted to destroy the monitor.
As always, be carefull with changing settings. Could damage the computer.
Example.
I have the Industrial by the incoming and outgoing. Prevents traveling through city.
I had post office in Center to prevent traveling far any direction. I use public transportation to CUT down cars. I use parking lots by the tons.
The traffics empty.
I don't build hundreds of tiny homes, I use only effective dense buildings.
In the end the cpu works TONS less and you can build the most massive city and it runs very smoothly.
The fun thing about this game is getting the city to be so optimized that you hit those HIGH population numbers easily.
You can do it.
aww man thats amazing, I never thought of making an ornament out of an old CPU
all seriousness... This really sucks. I actually created the "perfect City". I was excited, I did it, right? I was able to figure out all the ins and outs. Maxed happiness, income rolling in, no traffic jams just a perfect city. (don't get me wrong the occasional jam and icon would pop but then go away) The population was low around 64k. I have a screen shot somewhere...
But then I noticed it. At 3x sim speed my CPU usage was 99% at 1 speed it was 50ish% so I started to realize that I was coming up to the end of my city that I could no longer play the game I have hit that "hardware" wall, That is when I decided to uninstall and call it quits. At that point I figured the game wasn't for me. After all I was not going to spend 5k to upgrade just to play CS2.
For those wondering my specs are.
i7-12700k
3080ti
64gb Ram
I still hang around waiting for that announcement that they have addressed this issue. Or anything really....
**edit**
here it is! Ahh Summersville you will be missed sent to the recycle bin :(

the standard speed is ok for me, but the 2x and 3x almost no diff.
so when you fix traffic jam you need to wait minutes warching “snails” who barelly move to see if its fixed :(
just wondering why cars cant move faster -
not even talking about stupid lane switching/using logic. The old CS1 seems better in this point.
The devs did great job - i’m just looking who to have long lasting fun with this game so i hope:
a) someone knows some hack :) or tweek how to temporary get higher performance
b) devs could pripritize this issue to help all players to enjoy their game :)
thats all :)
The easiest solution is to go to options, click on Game play then Order the i9 14900K and overclock it. Then maybe you can get a faster sim up to 500k.
