If you like it, it's so cheap right now, you can get tons of DLC for it and still spend way less than the $50 for the second newer game.
CS1 runs better, it plays better, it has more options, it has more toys, it's just better.
If you really grow to love the game, then in a while, C:S2 might be worth the money.
Right now, it is NOT worth the $50 at all. Especially considering the problems and how poorly it runs and lack of anything from C:S1 other than very basic game mechanics.
Get the first, it's cheap and has tons of mods. If you like it enough, then maybe the $50 for C:S2 will be worth it by the time you make up your mind.
You didn't even play the first game even though it's been out for 8 years and almost 9 months? Definitely buy the 1st game, 2nd game is absolute trash. Each update they just keep making it worse and worse.
Besides there's no mods for the 2nd game, you get what you get. I mean there are, but it's on sketchy sites. No thanks. I only want proper road retextured mods and good buildings in the game with proper RCI demand and proper traffic behavior.
If you buy the 2nd, you'll think that's the norm, it's not. The 2nd game is crap, I physically cannot play it due to the poor crap quality textures that keep becoming blurry for some reason.
1st game has thousands of Mods.
with 80-95% Steam user scores.
I prefer CS2 so far but seem to be in the minority. I guess it depends which aspects of the games are important to you.
CS1 is fun, more beginner friendly, has lower system requirements and is a lot more stable. Personally though I felt like a whole ton of stuff in that game was horribly broken such the night time economy, the complete lack of air pollution, the insane level of traffic in industrial areas / freight stations, the fact that all of the stuff added in the DLCs didn't really integrate very well together, etc.
My impressions of CS2 so far are that it addresses all of my issues with the first game, feels like a much better simulation and has things like buildings abandoning which CS1 didn't, but is still a little buggy (though nowhere near as bad as the impression you'd get reading forum posts). But although the simulation aspect feels better to me, the game throws endless amounts of money at you making the game feel too easy. But then again all city builders after SC2000 have seemed too easy imo. It does seem like I can build whatever the hell I want in CS2 without ever coming close to needing a loan, but that can easily be fixed via an update or mod.
I find CS2 a far superior game, very exciting, totally playable today, but buggy or unreliable behind the scenes, with no clear date for a total quality test of all it's systems (and the devs not communicating too much about it).
Designing the city is a far more complex and satisfying experience than in CS1. Lots of things/systems are intertwined, having them all function to perfection is a satisfying task. Parts of the simulation are disabled in code in the game's current state, but enough function somewhat already. I would not waste my time with CS1, the simulation is too simplistic, just put up with CS2's unfinished state and enjoy a really nicely designed game.
I'd argue the simulation in CS2 is right now worse than in CS1. It has more systems but they basically don't work. Even the lane switching in CS2 is worse than the non lane switching in CS1. And of course in CS1 you can use mods to add it that actually make the traffic better instead of worse.
I think the main attractive of CS2 is the road tools, that's the most visible feature when watching a game being played. They allow you to build road networks that in modded CS1 would take a LOT more time. But on the other side, while it may take much more time in CS1 to build a good looking interchange for example, you can build intersections and interchanges are just not possible in CS2, at least until mods arrive.
Reading ( other ) user thread forum posts, some players seem to be happy that the game further gets simplified and that game problems/features/functions get patched out.
Gameplay wise the console versions will be a no brainer.
They just need to get this CS:1 mod game working there.
CS2 if you want a beige, grey, dreary realistic style without using your brain much because the game plays itself mostly without presenting much problems or friction to the player. U will be swimming in money in no time and will have the same 7 skyscrapers everywhere
The simulation is worse than CS1, there are no mods, performance is very bad, and graphics lack variety of assets (cause no custom assets and no dlcs).
And the irony is that the simulation was supposed to be the saving grace of CS2 once the terrible performance became evident. The game ran like ♥♥♥♥ but at least has "deep simulation". Well, it doesn't, and simulation speed is ♥♥♥♥ too, albeit supposedly way more efficient and capable of using multi-core.
The improvements will have to be MASSIVE in order to work well in console. Keep in mind all of this is with no mods and no custom assets, imagine how bad would the simulation and graphics run with many mods and custom assets.
The teeth of the citizens are being rendered, the monitor cables of the PCs insides the parking booths are rendered too. That's the level of optimization and polish the game has at release. It will take months, in their own words, to work out that LoD stuff that should be at release. But that's why they delayed the console, because the performance. They could get away with it in PC but not in console. That's how bad the state of the game is.
I think the console versions will be a 1:1 clone of the pc version, Relic CoH3 style.
Everything else would be a gamers fantasy illusion dream, like this game. My opinion.
Ever.
Can you just imagine the conversation?
MS or Sony rep: "You mean, even when fully zoomed out, the game is rendering the teeth of every sim? Even though I can't see them zoomed out?"
CO rep: "Yes."
MS or Sony rep: "And when I zoom in, I still can't see their teeth?"
CO rep: "Yes."
MS or Sony rep: "And they are still rendered. For every sim?"
CO rep: "Yes."
MS or Sony rep: "We're done here."
Maybe they achieve Payday 3 console version(s) parody release level,
but I guess thats just a personal dream :D
I could imagine that they further simplify the game in general, as they are working towards the console releases... 1:1 clone @.@
Not because its consoles, just because they are lazy.
Game mechanics problem? ...Patch the function feature out, hush hush away.
CO: I have here the last pre release version.
SONY/MS: well, does still run like ♥♥♥♥?.
CO: ummm, ehhhh, we've just fixed the teeth being rendered from far away.
SONY/MS: don't care!, does still run like ♥♥♥♥, is it a buggy mess?.
CO: we've made some other improvements like for example....
SONY/MS: couldn't care less!. Will we have a wave of complaints and refunds if we allow you to release it on our platform?
CO: Ok, I guess we can postpone the release a few months
