geothermal power stations should not cause air pollution
how does this make any sense?
this is stupid and crippling my gameplay experience.
a geothermal power station works by having a deep well multiple km into the ground where they pump cold water into and the earth boils it and converts it to steam which comes out and turns a generator.
if we assume it is a modern design, it will be a binary-cycle type that in no way will pollute the air because the water is recycled.

this is a terrible misrepresentation of geothermal power, an important contribution to a zero-carbon future.

Geothermal power plants do not burn fuel to generate electricity, but they may release small amounts of sulfur dioxide and carbon dioxide.

How much of that? You can do your own research. I'm sure once the modding is live and well the modders will balance this better (if the vanilla version is not accurate enough).

Air pollution in the game is pretty much anything that isn't simply noise that makes something unpleasant to live next to. Ever lived next door to a geothermal plant?

older ones may, but the binary cycle ones do not. I'm not sure why this game would push for older style ones which release the excess steam as waste

I have no idea but if we read the description of the Geothermal Power Plant in the game itself it seems to point towards the older style. Perhaps it's also a way to try to solve this puzzle.. now you gotta place it remote, take wind into account, perhaps surround it with a whole lot of trees to combat pollution. Either way, modding, i'm sure will allow you tweak this however you please down the road.
Where's the pollution from the miles long traffic jams of cars and trucks idling on the streets while sims leisurely have picnics on the road?

Pray tell go find time to visit your local(aboard) nearest geothermal site. And you tell us how are those rotten eggs smell not polluting XD.

In theory "zero-carbon" power generation is the best thing ever, but in practice it always is a polluting, environmentally-destructive mess that nobody wants to live near. Only modern nuclear is safe and actually clean, when operating, but still there's so much irrational fear about it people don't want to live near them either, and the mining can potentially be messy (though not as bad as other "green" power). I'm glad this element of realism with geothermal is present in the game. All too often it's treated as having no downsides (aside from maybe cost).

i been messing with geothermal power since yesterday, you call that air pollution? lol. put a big coal power plant and see what happens. the pollution geothermal creates nearly non existent.

There is air pollution from traffic. You can find it in the air pollution info panel.

Reminds me when you are amazed by the polluting power of diesel generators of emergency batteries… it’s like locally source apocalypse level pollution, now you wonder why they are perfect for disaster control!

I had achievement "proper energy" by building ma geothermal station instead of classic one, but it isn't proper at all.
Made the mistake to build under strong wind and a big area became toxic untila moove in no wind zone.
No reason for this.
