does university placement matter?
Can I place it at the edge of the map and expect it to be fine?

Sure, Why not... Nothing else makes sense. This checks out.

Should be near your educated population. I get it's big but the closer to a population that qualifies in going to the university. It will affect travel times. That being said it will still populated if people are eligible.

All of the above. Mark this as the solution. Great answer.

Is it true tho? When I have had Universities on the outskirts it filled with what was available.

It will still populate but people have to travel further meaning more traffic.

Yes it will fill up, however how they get there and how long it takes is more important. Overall the best place is central to the map or near a transport hub. Worst place is generally the corners.

"Overall the best place is central to the map" -couldn't we say that about a lot things that send out service vehicles e.g. garbage dump, cemetery/crematorium, post office, etc? Or is it more critical for The University, and we have a little more flexibility/margin of error with the other services?

It's not critical really, it'll just affect traffic patterns. A subway line from a high-medium residential zone directly to the university should suffice. Failing all that, if you make people drive to schools and other points of interest from far away, after awhile you won't be able to keep up with people trying to park. I promise, it'll overwhelm you, and every road in your city will come to a screeching halt. I think it actually might be the only way to loose the game right now haha.

Its the final tier in education so not every cim will go to your university. The current state of the game revolves around elementary schools

Yet some how my city is full of 12-18 year old tech geniuses.

Technically, put it at the corner will have an impact of traffic pattern and graduation time, but…
- Every ingame building has actually much less worker per shift then « employment » number, for a full university I would say an optimistic estimation is 100. So there’s actually very little impact and definitely no need for a metro line with 1200 passengers… No, even a bus lane is an over-exaggeration
- There’s no prove that the « graduation time » on the info panel have anything to do with actual graduation time or dropout rate. By contrast, it has been proven by many that average students take 1-2 years in primary school and 1-2 months for others…
- If the university take-up the land that should belong to high density and the high-density are now in the corner, well, that’s gonna have a much greater impact on traffic, because:
1. Industrial and commercial building needs to import / export good. So extra traffic and extra price.
2. They have higher density than university. University is 40*28, with that size you can have at 24 largest 6*6 building, which means 4800 or more employees
So, a simple conclusion is:
Place them in the corner

So true. I only have people in my Universities if they can cross the only bridge of death and starvation onto my island. I guess that’s why everyone is coming in and no one is leaving. Maybe I should happy about the Death’s End bridge. :steamlaughcry:
