Res zone immediately and always condemed
This particular plot was condemned from the moment it got zoned, even though all its neighbors were zoned at the same time. No matter how many times I destroy the building - in fact, even if I dezone it and rezone it, it immediately shows the condemned icon.

This is new land, which I've just purchased and started to build n, there's no weirdness in its history.

Anyone seen anything like this?

Yes, it's a floating point error associated with both the road and terrain.
You have to delete the road, flatten the terrain and relay the road.
You may be able to nudge the road slightly left and right using the upgrade tool with snapping off too, haven't tried it.

Cool. Thanks.

A little more experimentation directed me to the bumpy terrain in the last cell of the plot. I rezoned it, leaving off that last cell, and it was able to build the (smaller) house normally.

So, in a way, it's kind of an accurate sim: builders are trying to build on a plot of land that has too much slope. Inspectors come along and condemn it as unsafe. :)

I mean... I'm not going to dower your imagination :P, but you may run into the same issue later where zoning tiles keep flip-flopping between two roads and can't decide which one they want to be associated with. -- Same issue. Just incase you run into it.
