About rent mechanics.

Key point:
"Factors affecting rent:

The game considers a wide variety of factors when determining the rent price for a given building. This is a simplified list of factors, but it goes even deeper than this when actually crunching the numbers.

Commute time (lower time = higher rent)
Travel time to shopping (lower time = higher rent)
This means that mixed use buildings are going to have higher rents due to this alone!
Household happiness, health, and wellbeing (higher values = higher rent)
Tax rate (lower tax = lower rent)
Side note: Children reduce the tax rate of the household! Currently, birth rates are controlled by random chance, but a fun mod might allow citizen happiness to affect the birth rate chance!
Highest household education level (higher education = higher rent)
Service coverage (police, healthcare, communication, education, garbage, entertainment, welfare) (higher coverage = higher rent)
Dwelling unit size (lot size * floors / units) (higher size = higher rent)
This means that zoning high density alone may not be enough to help. Consider zoning smaller lots to force smaller dwelling units, but be careful that units don't get too small, because this has a negative effect on happiness.
Land value (higher value = higher rent)
Urban blight (nearby crime, abandonment, pollution, homelessness) (more blight = lower rent)
Building level (higher level = higher rent)

Agree, there needs to be a very detailed Wiki page on all of this. Do I remember rightly SimCity4 had a huge book you could buy, seem to remember owning it

No not a wiki or an external source. If I click on an industry building that has a poblem I want to know what the problem is, what is causing the problem.
I want to see their trucks in usage, I want to see their storage level, i want to see the amount of credits they pay for transportation, taxes, rent, power, water, pollution, crime or whatever may inpact its bussiness.
Because only then I can make an informed decision, about how to help a stuggling building or if I should dismiss it and rezone it somewhere else.
Right now I have to guess what may be wrong with a building and then try stuff that may, or may be not, change things in the future.

For example If you have a Commercial building that is struggling you have a problem because the cause of its struggling can be basicaly anything, from customer income side over location all the way back to the raw material import production for the underlying industry.
I can not make an informed decision I can only guess and waste my time to try to fix it. But then maybe I don't even have to fix it, because it may fix itself 10 minutes later, because of some change In the production chain that I made 2 hours ago, but is not effecting the building right now.

I'm the government right? If a business can not afford to import goods or can not find a customer thats their problem. Maybe not open the 25. furniture business in a 4000 people village then. Basic business rule.

But if the game wants me to play strategic with production chains and stuff then it needs to give me the information this this kind of gameplay requires.

Disagree. Realistically, if you are running a city, you do not have perfect knowlege. You have a lot of information and have to pull the levers of power in a manner that seems reasonable. There will be some trial and error.

If you know exactly the lever to pull in every situation, the game is just playing with blocks. And BTW, governmental leaders do care whether businesses are successful, they are the foundation of the tax base and the economic engine of the area.
