Cities: Skylines II
Greed is what kills gaming companies/games.
🚨 Attention Gamers! 🚨

💥With CS2 pulling back on Steam Workshop support, unlike its predecessor CS1, there's no doubt they're aiming to monetize features we loved in CS1. Remember those awesome features you thought should inherently be part of CS2? Well, they've intentionally left them out! The gaming community called this move early on, hoping that Steam Workshop would bridge the gap, but alas, it's clear that was never the plan.

❓And can we talk about the missing editor at launch? How are companies still thinking they can pull the wool over our eyes? When features were part and parcel of the first game, it's only natural to expect them on Day 1 of the sequel. Their "lack of time" excuse? Hardly believable, given they've had since 2018. Or did they just wake up one day in 2022 thinking, "Let's squeeze every penny from our fans with CS2?"

🔥As the release date loomed, CS2 began dropping shocking revelations about what NOT to expect. From eager anticipation, my emotions quickly spiraled into concerns of another "Cyberpunk 2077" scenario unfolding. Is the real deal with CS2 going to be a three-year wait?

💡Moral of the story? Keep those expectations in check and be wary of the hype train!

🎮 Stay informed and game smart! 🎮

Paradox is starting to ban people on the forums for criticising their decisions.

Another reason why Steam is better, you don't have power tripping mods defending their own product by banning customers.

Confirmed.

I'm not surprised. They have a very easy trigger, not just for that but also for closing or deleting threads mildly criticizing the game in question.
And the personified greed here are the investment companies owning Paradox.
9/10 of Paradox' biggest investors appear to be rather unrelated to tech and only see their investment as a vehicle to hedge and grow their wealth… and the one that isn't is Tencent Holding. Ffs, I never thought I'd mention Tencent as a positive. :/
I'm not sure who owns Colossal Order, but even if they are an independent organisation on paper, they appear to be highly dependent on Paradox in practice.

Not financial advice! (duh…)

Investors seeking gains from the videogame industry has greatly intensified over the past years due to its unprecedented growth, but it appears most still need to make sense of having invested in a highly volatile industry dependent on its community. Eternal growth is a lie that can't be forced!
Just look what happens to Ubisoft. I wouldn't be surprised if CDP and PDX are next.

They seem to have a 12-year-old relationship with Paradox, I find it an interesting read.

I played Cities in Motion, and I found the game was a bit limited in scope and size ... but great, back then :)

CiM1 is a great game no doubt, much better than CiM2. Then they abandoned the franchise entirely and moved to CSL. Maybe we'll see something similar happen with CSL2? Who knows…

On the relation between PDX and CO: According to the article, PDX owns all the stuff CO makes. Even though they say PDX grants CO great freedoms, it's clear who's calling the shots.
This game also releases on Microsoft Game Pass and EPIC Store and COG. Mods in the Steam workshop are not available on those platforms. Official mods from one place ARE available on all platforms. Why have 5 different ways to get mods .. making it much harder for players and modders?

Thanks for the information. I've honestly been afraid to look at the investor side of Paradox (ignorance is bliss) and I wish I could just go back to being ignorant and not paying attention to the people behind the curtains (developers, publishers, etc).

I just want to play the game and be happy, but moves like the recent modding announcement make stuff like this very difficult.

Not five but two: Paradox and Steam workshops. And if you have those two options how is it any harder for a player who'd be able to just use whatever likes the most?.
oh the irony EA greed kills sim city and out of the ashes city skylines grows. "time is a flat circle"
There is literally no debate here, paradox mods is better for the community, they have confirmed that they wont monetize them, it is better for the modders. Why is this so hard for people to grasp?

There is a lot of nice people in this forum, maybe this game series someday gets multiplayer...one can dream and hope :)
It would give the community a great fun boost.

This game is the last of my 2023 "series". The series was CoH3, Payday3 and KSP2.
All titles turned out as turd garbage, this is the only game of the 4 which is decent, nice, a proper game and fun. Cities2 is the only one I bought and kept.

Originally my series included Men of War 2, but a real war bombarded the devs - Sadly.

That's just words in a non-legal-document. Unity also said a lot of nice things before the debacle and then changed the TOS. Companies like Blizzard and Bethesda also promised the stars (metaphorically). So who knows how things are going to be in five years.

And btw I'd also prefer to exist a Paradox+Steam workshop than just the Steam workshop alone.

Please, go to Paradox Plaza and check out the amount of mods there are for CSL.
Then tell me that Workshop and Paradox Plaza can "coexist" when Workshop has some 3500 times as many mods.
It is just not feasible, 'cos given a choice. Modders are lazy.

This move does nothing to Steam owners, but Console and GOG players actually get access to the same amount of stuff as Steam owners. That is a huge win for everyone.

That's apples to oranges because console version of CS1 was made by a different company than CO, so mod/asset system is not exactly the same and mods available in that site are a curated selection and not freely uploaded.

CS2 is going to use a different workshop, its own workshop exclusive for the game and because CS2 is made by CO assets/mods are directly compatible between all versions, so no conversions are needed between platforms. There is no reason why each time a mod is uploaded/updated in one platform it wouldn't also be done the same into the other.
