Build smaller zones!
I feel like i've been playing all wrong, usually I set up lots to be maximum size unless i can't but I think the better scaling of this game is throwing me off.

Things felt so chunky when I just needed more.

Well it seems like smaller zones have a lot of benefits. For one you get more variety in industry zones, and apparently the rent is cheaper for smaller buildings.

this also seems to control building height too, I thought my high density zones looked weird, but thats cause all the zones were the same size. Make room for big buildings you get only big buildings.

Using more alleys helped a lot, and it looks better too, even for things like the mixed zones having a much smaller grid of main roads and alleys made a lot more sense.

I noticed this too. Also make sure that the zones on the ends of long blocks dont take up land vertically (i.e. like this)

XXOXX
XXOXX
XXOXX
XXOXX
XXOXX
XXXXX
XXXXX
XXXXX

Where X/O is the block and O is one building.

I use highway onramps (which don't create zoning so can be used to block zoning) to allow some roads to zone instead of others. That lets me make lots of different sized plots with roads nearby.
