Road connecting
Everytime i try to connect a road to a building, it just ends up doing a dead end, sometimes the "need to connect a road here" icon disappears, sometimes it doesn't. Is it normal for the road to not actually appear connected to the building's model? If so, very unintuitive.

The road has to go alongside. Ends of roads don't connect.

even then, there's a sidewalk separating the two. So is it really just badly portrayed?

Try using the road snapping option "snap to building" to get an idea of where the road needs to go to connect. Many buildings have a driveway or parking lot and you must make sure that this part of the building has access to a road.

But yes, the road segment itself does not have a driveway when connected to the building, so the building's vehicle entrance will appear to connect to the sidewalk.
