Damn dude, that sucks. Should save more often though.

Agree. That sucks big time. I mean, I haven't crashed yet but now I'm gun shy on my saves.

I literally just had that happen lol. There is an autosave, it's just not on by default, which is odd cause usually it's on by default and goes off every 10 mins and annoys the living hell out of me.

The autosave option is literally the first thing you see when click on "Options" in the main menu.

Auto save has to be turned on it's stupid

Autosave has to be turned on manual. But be AWARE it doesnt save the options, so if you restart the game you have to turn it on AGAIN!

There is an auto save you can set it to 3 min, 10 min, 30 min, 1 hour it's in the very first menu. you can also set how many saves you want to keep, 3, 5, 10, I keep 10. You must have missed walked away thinking it was going to load forever.

Autosave works but in my experience with building games it is better to familiarize oneself with the Quick Save Option.
In this game its standard on F5.
When you build something, intersections, new zones whatever, save quickly manually during building steps and after you finished. Gives better peace of mind.
But i have to say that this game runs pretty stable for me.
Just had one crash in >10 hours and this was due to my OS, not the game most likely.

You can turn Auto-saves on and off in options menu
