That said, I am almost certain there will be custom maps.
Yes, a random map generator would be quite handy indeed.
On the note of mountainous terrain, it is quite possible to create mountainous maps, there are quite a few good ones in the Workshop, or yourself.
One issue has to do with scaling and height. For example, creating maps based on real life using proper scale often results in underwhelming heights in game, when in real life they are more impressive. Also, slopes that are very hard to impossible to attain in real life are peanuts in game.
On this note, however, I would rather see much better building behaviors in mountainous terrain, in CS1 the regular building behavior is very poor, and has limitations such as:
- Forced bridges across the slightest variation in terrain.
- Roads and tunnels often follow the terrain slope rather than staying at a straight line.
- Very poor tunnel and bridge customization options. In particular, the default tunnel entrance skin is horrendous anywhere other than particular urban places.
Something like this should be available by default for tunnels and bridges, or when building across mountains and terrain, for that matter.

Okay, maybe I've not taken enough care of the CS2 maps shown in the videos - I was always focused on the buildings and especially the roads & traffic behaviour :)
@Tsubame: I also hope that there's better building behaviour. TF2 is also a good example. Let's hope they've optimized building structures :D
Regarding the mountains, I wonder how they implemented the terrain modification in CS2. In CS1 there was a storage for soil and if you have enough money, the terrain could be modified and fills or empties the storage. This mechanism allowed to transform even the highest mountains into flat land and vice versa. But in real life, no one would do that.
Since I'm not a very creative player, I tend to make flat land and build my city block-wise, so my cities don't look naturally grown. There's nothing which enforces me to build according to the existing terrain. I assume in CS2 the mechanism will be similar, but I want to try another play style, modifying terrain only where it's really necessary. A map which isn't fully flat but also not full of high mountains might help to get more realistic looking cities.
For the import of real terrain, I see the problem with scaling and height, but I'm sure it's possible to import with modified height ratios. So a mountain would become just a hill, but the map is more realistic.
I'll have to look if the developers already released a video regarding landscape modification.
