Agreed, I too would like to see official linux support.

Yeah me too but they have released City Skylines and other games with native Linux clients.
So chances are there that they will release native.

So far every UE5 game on Steam I played on Linux was through the Proton, while plenty of Unity games had their native builds provided, so there will likely be no native build for this game, either, especially after ditching Unity for UE5.

This may not be the most popular opinion, but I prefer a Windows game working well through WINE/Proton over a neglected Linux port. I don't think CO did a good job with CSL1 on Linux.

I agree fully with this.
Instead of making native linux client its way better to use the time to make it fully Proton-compatible.

Developers no longer need to make Linux ports.

Even a porting company like Feral says the following. (see twitter post link below)

We will continue to assess the feasibility of porting games to Linux, but there is generally less demand for native titles since Valve’s launch of Proton.

"VALVe cut the demand for our services on Linux titles, and we don't see the point in updating them since the magic thing exists. Just use the Windows version."

Imagine.. this is from a linux porting company… “Just use the windows version”

And let’s not forget Forbes magazine:

Despite two straight years of incredible advancements in Linux gaming — specifically Proton, the compatibility layer that lets us easily run thousands of Windows games on Linux — there has been a negligible increase in Linux gaming adoption. As marketing-centric scribe James Mawson so poignantly states, it’s a “growth so feeble, it’s difficult to separate from statistical noise; Linux isn’t even a serious threat to the Mac in this space.”

As Valve’s informative 2020 recap points out, an increase in developers testing their games against Proton (without needing to invest huge time and resources into developing native ports)

Linux ports are on the decline.. Linux gaming is on the rise..

Crusading for a linux port in 2023 is an exercise in futility.

+1 for release. GNU/Linux and Steam Deck.

you still can get better performance with a proper linux port
like metro exodus, or valheim

or some just want to learn new things/get better by porting games like ron gilbert with monkey island

I do not disagree with you. I just see the impact proton has had on Linux as a whole.

It opened up so many games to linux users. but in doing so, it has also made it possible for developers to save on the considerable cost of factoring in a dedicated linux build.

It works, (more often than not)
It lets Linux and steam deck users play most steam games.
It saves on resources and direct support for developers.

But all this at a cost. Fewer dedicated builds.

there are still a lot of linux ports.

and they do not make linux pors for the money.
metro exodus worked with proton since day1, but they still released a linux port 1,5 YEARS later
same with desperados 3
postal 4 worked with protonGE since early access and the promised a linux port

none of them made a lot of money with these ports, but they love their games, they love linux, they want to learn something

Proton is good, but for me native version is preferable.
That's why +1 for the Linux port
Teodosio [GNU] Mar 6, 2023 @ 11:28pm
Port is when the game is translated afterwards.
Native is when the game is developed for GNU from the start.

-1 for Port, +1 for Native and for Freedom.

Why do you think so? I think it runs just fine. I've been playing C:S from the day one on my machine with all the major DLCs and never had issues with the game itself. Only with the launcher once they introduced it but that was an Electron + Nvidia Prime issue in the first place, from what I remember at least.

So I am adding my vote ... +1 for Linux port, hoping for the best.

I have issues with CSL1 crashing when it caches to swap and have to work around their launcher. Honestly, for that reason, I haven't touched the game in quite a while.
Each Linux install is different. I hope they at least manage to get it working with off-the-shelf hardware-software combos like the Steam Deck or maybe a future Decktop, but I'm not very optimistic.
