In the press conference Paradox confirmed that the developers abandoned Unity engine and switched to Unreal Engine 5 in the game Cities: Skylines II

Hopefully no trouble for MODS.

That's nice to hear. Unreal is so much more optimized than the old ass version of Unity CS1 uses. Unity is not made for games like this.

Edit: thanks for the free points y'all

They did? I missed that note. That's huge and I want to hear more!

If they want the graphics and reflections they showed in the announcement trailer (was any of that in-engine?), then I get why. I just expected them to stick with Unity maybe with use of DOTS/ECS for a more performant simulation.

would be helpful to get somebody to confirm this as its pretty big news for the business side of things. I hope its true but we'll see.

Unreal 5 would be huge trouble for the mods.

I don't think UE5 is a thing here, even the announcement trailer was CG rather than gameplay.

"Unity is not made for games like this."
Yeah and we all know Unreal Engine is the go-to engine for making city builder games, such as the famous Unreal Tournament: Skylines.

Of course there will be trouble with mods! Why is everyone shocked about this, the first game is 8 years old! Games need to move on ffs.

Announced trailer uses the Unreal Engine 5 game engine used in Cities: Skylines II

Screenshot from Cities: Skylines II. There is no actually gameplay in it, but you can see what the graphics will be in the game based on Unreal Engine 5

How do you know it's Unreal ?

Steam rules forbid the use of CGI graphics in screenshots of game descriptions, so this is a 100% screenshot from the game

No it's not, it's just a frame from the render trailer

Please learn to read first and formost. Unreal Engine is bad for mods IN GENERAL, huge downloads, user-unfriendly, no editor (you basically have to learn whole Unreal Suite make a mod), no working loadorders etc.

IF they manage to provide meaningful asset editor too, I would be very surprised.
