What's going on with the bloated size of this game? 724 MB, seriously?

The latest Among Us update is 471 MB, and the total game size is 724 MB. Back in the 2000s you'd look at filesizes with shareware like Winamp and Utorrent, and when the program size went up a lot it was often a good indication they started including adware or other crap.

What on earth could possibly use so much disk space in a game like this? This game is basically a small set of 2-D resources, code for handling the network, and code to move the characters around the map.

For me, the program data file is officially 416.83 MB, on disk size is 437.4 MB. User data is 3.2 MB, crash logs are 3.0 MB, but the entire size of the compatdata file in which they reside (I use Linux so I must run Among Us via Proton) is 264.4 MB on disk, totaling 701.8 MB.

So yeah, I would agree with your implied suspicion that it's time to run virus scans on Among Us' directories.

"bloated" when the game is under 1gig in size? my dude, 2000's file sizes have no relevence to file sizes today. if you want to see real bloat, try looking at some of the games that are nearly 100gb in size
