Theres a mod for the original doom called "Who Dun It", it's so much like among us that I wouldn't be surprised if among us got the idea from it.

space station 13 if you want to really dive into the idea of this game. Be warned its kind of polarizing and it takes a while to learn

In short, SS13 is a lot more complex and has a LOT more game mechanics. It is also a lot more difficult to get a grasp of and the interface is extremely clunky. Among us is a lot more accessible due to it's relative simplicity.

It's also very old and very buggy.

What usually happens in a round is that the chemist start making meth, the botanist starts growing weed, the chef snatches a body a traitor left behind to turn into mystery meat burgers, security starts beating up a random assistant and the engineers let loose a black hole singularity by accident which start eating through the station. Meanwhile the cargo technicians are putting one of their colleagues in a box, labeling it with the destination of the Head of Personnel's office and sending him for a ride through the pneumatic postal system. And an atmospherics engineers discovers that plasma burns pretty well and turn part of the station into a burning hellhole. Half the medics are banging their head on their desks on the many stupid ways people die and the other half is helping their demise along. The geneticist get's swamped with trying to clone dead people into new bodies, but during downtime he works on turning people into monkey's. In the off chance he get's bored, he start turning people into the literal hulk. Because he can.

That's an excellent summary of typical SS13 match, with one small omission. Clowns, you forgot about clowns.

Or were clowns exclusive to server I played on?

Great part of SS13 is that you have fun things to do even if you are not a traitor. Tasks in Among Us get boring quickly, in SS13 you can always do some wacky scheme, or just work towards discovering sarin recipe for when you finally get traitor, your call.

A lot of these games are modelled on Deceit:

Games like this existed before deceit but ok.

Yeah, its quite poplular, but actually the creators said in an interview they were actually inspired by a game they used to play in person, and not a game like TTT or stuff like that
Deceit (very similar, just 6 players instead of up to 10), Gmod (only with the gamemodes "Trouble In Terrorist Town" and "Murder"), Town of Salem. Those are the first three that come to mind.

Deceit is more or less the same. Gmod's two gamemodes are also more or less the same, just mostly depends on server rules and such. TOS, however, I would say is interesting to try. It has a note system where if you die, your note (assuming you wrote it) is shown to the survivors. So if you know certain people are safe, or suspect certain people, they can use your notes as reference. TOS also allows for PLENTY more people, I believe.

Nope, I totally forgot clowns. And Janitors, and mimes. Hell, and even Xenomorphs. The game is just too extensive to remember everything all in one go. :-)

And with what everyone included that's just scratching the surface right?
