Forged Alliance won't Launch

Supreme Commander will launch, Supreme Commander 2 will, but Forged Alliance never launches anything, it just sits on my Library saying "running" and then "online". It used to work prior to me losing my original disc.

What does your disc have to do with your Steam install?

I suggest to first verify your game files with Steam and if that doesn’t work try to rename your Game.prefs file to reset to initial settings.

The disc was just to say "before I got the Steam game, it would launch fine. I've tried verifying, and I can't find my Game.prefs file, even with hidden folders on.

You can also try to launch the game in compatibility mode and/or as administrator if you didn’t try it yet.

Still working, but thanks for the check up. It looks like the Game.prefs file just doesn't exist for some reason.

Wait, wait... let's see here... *sounds of pages rustling* Ah-ha! Is SupCom installed on the same drive as your Windows system files? If not, then move SupCom over there.
*page tearing noise* It says here you can check if the standard font size is 100%. I dunno what that has to do with it, but it's a thing apparently. Yeah, pop into Settings > System > Display and check that, under Scale and Layout, text size is 100%.
*explosion and falling paper scraps* Also try turning off Surround Sound. *cough*

As you can see, FA has nothing there.

The game.prefs file is being created upon launching the game
If your game crashes on launch then it can be that the game.prefs file is not being created

Assuming that moving the game install didn't solve your problem yet i suggest you try to run the gamewith some command line switches for no sound, no movies and windowed mode at some low window size like 1024x768

before use #11, remove old Game.prefs

and check \ do this:

path to game prefs will be ASCII only !!! aA-zZ, 0-1 i.e.:
C:\Users\%windows login%\AppData\Local\Gas Powered Games\Supreme Commander Forged Alliance\Game.prefs - file will be Unicode BOM

game folder will be Supreme Commander Forged Alliance

\steamapps\common\Supreme Commander Forged Alliance\bin\SupremeCommander.exe

Compatibility tab:

Run as Administrator
Disable full screen optimization
Override the high-resolution scaling mode
Scaling is performed: by the Application

\steamapps\common\Supreme Commander Forged Alliance\DirectX\DXSETUP.exe will be installed

Control panel - Programs and components - Turning on and off Windows components:

Media components - Windows Media Player - enabled - need for playback video in old games
in some cases can be replaced by standalone version Media Player Classic - Home Cinema (MPC-HC) + standalone media codecs

Components of previous versions - DirectPlay - enabled
.Net 3.5 (include 2.x 3.x) - enabled

M$ visual c++ runtime 2005 x86 & x64 + sp1 will be installed (4 files)

Icechuck wrote that the Game.prefs is not even created. We also don’t know which Windows version he uses. Installing SC:FA should install all necessary things except Windows components. Imho installing FAF will not remedy the launch problem - but one never knows for sure until trying ;) .

but SCFA not install vc++ that it used, only DX and you may see on screen that folder where will be game.prefs renamed: SupremeCommander

but it will be Supreme Commander for first game
and Supreme Commander Forged Alliance for SCFA
it's sabotage!!!
