gpg (the development studio that made SC/FA) even had a server/client system (gpg dot net) and a forum so that people could share mods and discuss but the studio and the server was shut down.
What came after is FAForever[www.faforever.com] which is basically the same as gpg just open source[github.com] and community driven.
So far every game that came after FA is considered to be a letdown in many ways by many people supcom2, planetary annihilation for example.
If you feel like waiting 4-5 more years for a new game that might be able to follow after total annihilation/supcom you should watch out for whatever Chris Taylor[wikipedia.org] is doing.
