What would be convenient here is a command similar to 'Split Attack' by pressing Shift+G (utilised to minimise overkill; see http://forums.faforever.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=3834). That is to say, I do not think there is a similar command for Assist, but for all we know Shift+G might work for Assist as well.
An alternative, however, is to use Formation Move. If a Move order is given by right-clicking, then instead hold right-click to order the selected units to move in a formation to the destination. The Unit Micro page on the FAForever Wiki says, "In this mode units will stay in formation all the way up to their destination and will move with the speed of the slowest unit within the group." The reduction in speed -sometimes feeling like more of a reduction than just matching the slowest unit- can be damaging in a game due to the lost time, and therefore a standard Move order may be preferred when the units cover safe ground, with a Formation Move order being given when the danger zone is entered.
Formation Move also provides the advantage of automatic (without micro management) distribution of units, spacing Mobile Shield Generators uniformly throughout the formation to maximise shield cover, and placing tankier units at the front of the formation to receive and dispense firepower. Fair credit to the original developers hallelujah for this one.
such a mod does exist[forums.faforever.com]
will also be added to FAF next patch[github.com]
PhilipJFry, I must ask how you manage to stay so well informed.
also what will get added next patch is not the area command mod but "merely" an improved split command
P.S: I recomment playing the campaign with total mayhem Mod and extendet unit cap.. its double fun
You can even modify one file ''UnitCap x4/hook/lua/system/Blueprints.lua'' Open it using notepad. Find this line ''local CCdef = 0.25'' and change it from 0.01 to 1, as you want, for example 0.05. Modifying this line will enable you to have the limit as low or as high as you like, allowing potentially infinite units.

Even though they pretty much give the same solution... You can see the difference.
Stay in school America.
But, yeah, I'm no college graduate.
And the TL:DR is 'hold right-click to use formation', as Alibisx3 aptly put it.
