Is there no map
I am still early in the game. But so far all I have is a journal. and next mission objectives are shown as yellow waypoints on the hud.

There is a map but it's much smaller than Far Cry 5

Yeah, you're still in the introductory bit. You're not actually in Hope County proper, yet. So a map wouldn't be much good.

You'll get all the rest of the interface once you're fully into the game. The map, once you're set loose on the open-world part of the game, is maybe 60% to 70% the size of Far Cry 5's map.
