To explain further, Ubisoft games launched via Steam should never need an activation code, as Ubisoft Connect runs in the background and automatically authenticates games onto your Ubisoft Connect account.
In this case, running Odyssey first should allow both games to be authorised to your account. If that works, please let me know! If not, I'll be happy to suggest some further steps we can try.

I would appreciate it if this description would appear next to the ultimate description as a reference in the Steamshop, as I think that players will have started inquiries to the support of ubisoft and Steam on this topic. This would save a lot of time as a player first of all looking for information about why AC3 RE wants an activation key and where you can find it, until you come across a topic here in the forum that tells you that you have to download 80 gb first from Odyssey and have to start Odysssey in order to start AC3 RE at all. No need to make things complecate as it is.
Thank you for all of your input there and I understand that some of you're being asked for Activation Key by Ubisoft Connect client however you either don't have one in the first place or after putting it in, it does not allow you to proceed.
In that particular instance, in order to troubleshoot the issue, I would like to suggest you to try the steps below:
1. Please make sure you're launching Steam and Ubisoft Connect clients with Admin privileges
2. Then, please, navigate to the Ubisoft Game Launcher "cache" folder, by default located here: C:\Program Files (x86)\Ubisoft\Ubisoft Game Launcher\cache
3. Open the cache folder and move the "ownership" folder to a safe location.
4. Once you have backed up that folder, delete the "cache" folder.
5. After deleting the cache folder, please verify the game files within Steam:
- Open Steam
- Right-click the affected game in your Steam library and select Properties from the drop-down
- Select the Local files tab and click the Verify integrity of game cache... button
- Steam will verify the game's files. This process may take several minutes
- Once the process is completed, the Check Window will automatically exit
If an issue is found, you will be given the option to Repair, click Repair. After repairing the issue, please verify the game again until no issues are found.
6. When this has been completed, try launching the game again.
Keep us updated!
