To download the 1.42 patch, all you have to do is extract the files into your Return to Castle Wolfenstein folder under Steam/steamapps/common. When you boot up the game again, you should have modern resolution settings to choose from in your in-game settings.
Of note, you'll probably see some outdated advice telling you that you can simply change the resolution through the wolfconfig.cfg file. I don't recommend doing that, as it causes crashes at the end of many different levels throughout the game. It's technically doable as long as you change to an older 4:3 resolution like 1024x768 right before you exit a level, but it's a pain as you can imagine to constantly have to switch back and forth just in case there's an end level crash.
The only stable way of playing at a modern resolution like 1920x1080 is through fan made source ports like the Knightmare 1.42 patch mentioned above, the ioRTCW source port[github.com] which is vanilla as well, or RealRTCW mod, which is very faithful to the original game as well, though not 100% vanilla like the other two.
Hope that helps.
