1) Locate your "wolfconfig.cfg" file and delete it, then restart the game. This is the simplest solution, and the likely fix if this problem occurred after changing the resolution to a wide-screen one in-game (the Steam version adds these wide-screen options that were never in the retail version of RTCW, and will break your game if you select them. It's really dumb). The wolfconfig.cfg file should either be in steamapps/common/Return to Castle Wolfenstein/Main or My Documents/RTCW/Main.
2) As you said, Windows 10 has some issues with older games, so fan-made sourceports are a life saver. RTCW has a great one called "ioRTCW", which can be downloaded here: https://github.com/iortcw/iortcw/releases/tag/1.51c
Using a file archiver utility like WinRAR or 7zip, you're going to want to extract your newly downloaded files into your "Return to Castle Wolfenstein" folder in Steam, merging all when asked. Once that's done, doubleclick "ioWolfSP.exe" to open up the game in the sourceport. This sourceport is exactly the same as the vanilla game, except there's some bug fixes and widescreen and native resolution support up to 2560x1440.
3) Download the RealRTCW mod on Steam and play the game through that. It's built on the ioRTCW sourceport mentioned above, so it has widescreen as well as a few other features that the base game doesn't have while still remaining faithful to it.
Let me know if this helps!
