If you're playing Solo self found. go CoF, if you're not go MG.
CoF lets to target farm items and MG enables player trading. that's all there is to it.
Do you :
Want to buy the perfect items for your build and be done?
Enjoy chasing / grinding out items?
How long to you plan on playing?
Want to have some mini objectives to spawn targeted loot? *some thing to guide your grind
Want to find more loot on the floor? *get or make a loot filter
For me i enjoy the chase of finding items, but that is usually for one or two characters.
I plan on trying 2-4 characters so gonna try Merchants.
My problem when playing COF was that not picking up items that were really good, just not for my build or any build I wanted to play, felt really wrong.
I'll try Merchant Guild.
-You seem to like trading, and wished you'd done it before. You also seem to dislike CoF. That alone should answer your question.
-That said, I LOVE trading too in PoE1 but I still prefer CoF in LE and I don't really know why. It doesn't feel as important to me to trade. Maybe I like the crafting more? Maybe it's because I got used to not trading before that was allowed? Not sure.
-A lot of people start CoF, and then once they find enough non-CoF gear that can replace their good CoF gear, they take a bit of a hit to their gear but such that they can still manage, and they switch to MG. I don't think I'd like that, but some people do.
If you only wanna play one character and perfect your gear then i would say go Merchants guild 100% (which is exactly what the developers said as well).
I only use CoF (i'm not a fan of trading) to find all kinds of interesting items and then make characters around said items. If you play CoF you either need a strict loot filter or be ready to read a lot of items.
Which one is better ? Depends on your playstyle (which is why i suggested MG) and also depends on person who is answering :D CoF for life.
The game has the best filter and crafting out there. I've played 3500+ hours in POE1/2 and none of my high end chars was build with 100% SSF. Trade trade trade. In LE I've manged to create endgame gear without too much hassle even pre S1. And it will be even better in S2 since you're guranteed to have the exalted stat you need on your legendary.
But in the end, just select what you prefer. Only make sure that you use the loot filter. This will ease your life by so much, regardless what faction you choose
I still had a lot of say T7 items dropping that I had no use for BUT it felt so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ wrong just leaving them on the ground so I had bunch of stash tabs with basically useless items (useless to me).
It's a bit of a weird issue to have I'm aware. I wish getting stash tabs was easier on COF but maybe they have buffed that since 1.0?
Maybe you should simply try Merchant and see how it goes. I'll do that too eventually in S2
